Only natural born citizens can be President.
I agree with this because someone born here has more reason to defend the US then someone born elsewhere

I do. I think america is kind of about accepting differences and if you are a naturalized citizen you should have ALL the same rights as a natural born citizen. i also believe that it is hypocritical to say that only natural born citizens can be president because the first few presidents were not born here were they? I dont think a country should be built on hypocricy. Even the writer of the constitution said that it should be re drafted every so often because things change. i do however think that you should have to be citizen for x amount of years first...

While most of time there shouldn't really be a problem with the naturalized citizen becoming president, I don't think we should change the constitution on this point. The founding fathers thought it was important to put a safeguard in the constitution that would prevent someone who may hold allegiances to another country from holding the highest executive office.

While I think that's unlikely to happen, I'm against the idea of removing safeguards from the constitution just in principle. A naturalized can hold almost any other office except for that of president, and of the pool of available candidates for president we can count over 250 million. If a good president can't be found among that large of a pool, we have bigger problems then whether naturalized citizens can become president.

Yes. My reasoning is that I don't think being born here automatically changes a person in any way. How can we say that because one person, by chance, was born in one place that it makes them a better person or a person who would be more loyal to the nation. If someone is running for president we would get to find out everything about them from the press and dirt diggers, so I don't think there would be any danger of someone sneaking into our government.

Mostly I just think it is stupid to have a requirement that is something that you cannot control. No one chose to be born here or not here, so how could you require that?

Yes, an American citizen not born in the U.S. should be allowed to become president of the country. After all, we did originate from Europeans, so we couldn't just "claim" U.S. entirely for ourselves. It is completely racist for someone to say that an immigrant (who became a citizen) should not be allowed to become president of the U.S.

I believe if you are not born in the united states of America then you should not run for president of the united states. I believe that they should go back to there own country if they want to be president.

Well, no, and here is why.

I don't think that people not born here have the same feeling of loyalty to America that those who have lived here their entire lives do.

How would we know that they were serious and had our best interests in mind? Look at the people who just terrorized us on Sept 11th and continue to do so. Did anyone see that coming (ok... aside from Ollie North)? It could just be a staged set up for some elaborate plan to destroy us.

I don't think they should be allowed to simply because if there came a time when an attack was needed on their home country, it might be difficult for them to follow through with the attack. I think that is really why that rule was set up since it was more of an issue in the 1700's, but it can still be an issue today.
