I actually did that once for about a minute going 60 and the gears started grinding so I put it back in drive and it ran just fine afterward. I suppose if you just left it in reverse it would completely strip the gears but that wouldn't stop the forward momentum or cause you to loose control. Eventually I suppose the transmission would become inoperable and the car would roll to a stop.

I Love this question.... many answers

If you want a good out come try 100 MPH. That way you migh coast to the side of the road... Manual or automatic

At 50 to 85 MPH on a non computer Automatic car things will break. ..25 % of the time driver will crash because they can't handle the car after breaking parts.

At 50 to 85 mph on non computer Manaul car. You push the clutch in put it into reserve let out on the clutch? Question is which part will break 1st... Rear wheel drive car that breaks the drive shaft will most likely flip many times if the front u joint goes 1st ... If the rear u joint goes out you'll just coast to a stop after you trashed the transmission...

Now, computer shift controlled automatic you just trash transmission and void your warranty (if you have any) because the speed will be recorded when it when out and shifted into reverse...

Manual transmission, computer monitored, Trashed the transmission.... Only the driver will know what happened and if some else happened before the tow truck shows up...

No matter how you look at it.. Its not smart to force a car or truck to do something it wasn' t designed for... Will break... And if you kill more than yourself doing it that will be very very sad... Worse if you surive but kill someone else doing it...

Think before you Stupid.... I mean drink...

1-if it's manual transmission and driving at 80mph you won't be able to put it in reverse the reverse syncronizer will get striped
before that happens
2-if it's automatic transmission that won't happen either the transmission will be smoked first and the vehicle will continue to move foward (due to the innertia)until it stops (the reverse discs clutch will get damaged and probably the over running clutch too)

good god what a question!if you really wanna know what would happen you would jerk the transmission out of it.and probably do more damage than that what i havent realized right at the moment.but if you are thinking about doing that for the fun of it,than you better have your cell with you when you do it so you can call someone to come and pick u up!if not u will be walking home!

Do you mean, BEFORE you die?? If you survive and your car is still upright, you may want to read a book on 'TRANSMISSIONS: What NOT to do to them!' Or, have a spare one in the garage. You're going to need it.

Yep, I think you would be replacing a few parts about then. Yours and the cars!

You would get a headache and wet your pants (which would seep into the car seats).
