It depends on ur needs that what do u want to do with laptop or computer. If u just want to do the typing or document making work then a Rs. 10,000 computer will work fine. If u want to play latest games then u need a powerful assembled or company's computer like having good graphics card, good ram, good processor, motherboard etc. etc. The starting range of good comp. will cost u almost Rs. 30,000. If u watch movies and songs and need good sound output then u have to buy a comp with good speakers and a big moniter. It depends on the price of speakers and moniter and other components. And if u travel place to place and want to do work during travel or want to save space then u have to buy a laptop with good battery power and other components. Starting range will cost around Rs. 35,000.
And for RAM the latest is DDR2 RAM in India and u have to buy a good motherboard to use it.

Memory RAM Speed - Access Time, Megahertz (MHz), Bytes Per Second
Prior to SDRAM, speed was expressed in terms of nanoseconds (ns). This measured the amount of time it takes the module to deliver a data request. Therefore, the lower the nanosecond speed, the faster. Typical speeds were 90, 80, 70 and 60ns. Older 486 machines may have 80 or 90. More recent Pentiums will have 60 or 70.
MHz Speed Total Clock Cycles per Second Divide by 1 billions to get nanoseconds per clock speed.

Often, the last digit of a memory part number will represents the speed such as -6 = 60ns.
SDRAM speed is measured in megahertz (MHz). Speed markings on the memory chips may still specific nanoseconds, but in this case in represents the number of nanoseconds between clock cycles. To add to the confusion the markings on the chips don't match the Mhz value. Here is a conversion chart.
To calculate bytes per second you need to know the Bus Width and Bus Speed of your PC. The first thing to remember is 8-bits = 1 byte. If you have a 64-bit bus, than 8 bytes of information can be transferred at one time. (64 / 8 bits = 8 bytes)
If your bus speed is 100Mhz (100 million clock cycles per second) and the bus width is 1 byte wide, the speed is 100 MB's per second. With a 64-bit width, the speed is 800 MBs per second (64 / 8 * 100,000,000)
Rambus modules are measured in megabytes per second. Rambus modules are either 400 or 300Mhz. Because they send two pieces of information every clock cycle, you get 800 or 600Mhz. They have a 16-bit bus width or 2 bytes (16/8). The 400Mhz module speed is 1600MB a second or 1.6GB a second. (400,000,000 * 2) * 2. The 300Mhz module provides 1.2GBs a second.

Microsoft is about to release its latest operating system, Vista, in January. It’s going to make all of these “bargain” computers nothing but JUNK as soon as it’s released. The reason that you are seeing so many cheap systems on the market right now is because a lot of them CAN’T RUN Vista and the merchants are trying to dump them as hard and fast as they can before Vista shows up and everyone learns what a piece of crap they were sold for $500 (or whatever).

It is all in what you want, no real answer for this question, it how much money you want spend, some Video Card alone are over $1000 dollars and you can buy and nice cheap P-4 New for under $200 with sound and video....PC Magazine has how they rate each new computer on the market, if you don't want to buy the Magazine spend some time at the book store and look it over...

large displays use more power so if you cant be plugged in everywhere stay small and lenovo has the longest battery life the core 2 duo are the most efficiant 1gb ram is good 128 video ram is good and the glossy displays are nice for veiwing i like 15.4 but if you need longer battery life then 14 or 12 is what you might need most laptops get 1hr or less on a charge

U want to look about the Screen size any crashes
then hardidisk defragment it before buying,
processor speed
Ram speed to check memory speed open casin cover remove and check for speed
motherboard branded or unbranded because while formating ur harddisk u can get driver easily
thats all
