With 3 weeks left on our lease, we noticed severe water damage in our apartment, caused by a leak the landlord had refused to fix, that was causing mold and bugs in a bedroom. When we let the landlord know, they informed us our rent would be increasing by 10%. We are rent controlled, which only allows our rent to increase by 4% each year. I told the landlord the increase was illegal and she said "well, your rent was discounted before, we're now removing the discount." So we filed a complaint with the rent stabilization office and health department, since the landlord refused to fix the damage. They then informed us that they would be revoking our right to renew because they said "it seems like [we'd] be happier elsewhere." This doesn't fall under any of the 12 legal reasons for eviction and retaliation for exercising our tenant rights is clearly illegal. Our appointments with health and housing investigators are coming up. But what can we do in the meantime to protect ourselves? Help!

Well, you are on the right track with the health and housing inpectors.
But seriously, get another place. This landlord will make you miserable if you fight to stay there.

You absolutely need to see an attorney. Your attorney may accept a contingency fee if you win and if the Court awards your attorney's fees be paid by the slumlord.

People WIN THESE CLAIMS all the time. Get in there. Call tomorrow. Contact the State Bar of California and your local legal services. Talk to secretaries or paralegals, but get help NOW. Don't put up with this crap. GO get em!

This is in means for you to file against your landlord.
You can go to your local court house and file a order for him to appear in court , and bring this before a judge that will plainly let your landlord know that retaliation is illegal and no excuss to throw someone out of their home !
good luck...lisa

call the housing inspector, they are going to difficulty a contravention and your landlord would be compelled to make the upkeep. the actuality that they are locked in a dispute has truthfully no longer something to do with your landlord's accountability to you to be certain your residence is repaired. He could make the upkeep and then combat along with his coverage company, their coverage company, the different proprietor, the home affiliation and whomever else he desires to. it is not your problem.
