In my opinion, I believe it was due to jealousy. Think about it, if you hate someone it's because he/she has something you want...otherwise why would you hate someone for no reason, it has to be a reason for hatred...so it's definitely a jealousy thing. Whites wanted what they couldn't be - being black.
Also, blacks were very intelligent (til present) that they wanted their skills but whites were too lazy to do their own work so they used blacks to do it for them and thats where the hatred begin because they knew blacks had something to gain and the only way to stop blacks from gaining more knowledge were to enforce weapons, etc.
I can care less what anyone else believe, I know i'm correct and i'm sure everyone knows the truth but ashamed to say it, tata!

"Back in the day" is truly a trite phrase that could easily go away. What in heck time are you trying to talk about? If you're talking about the history of slavery in early America, this was not completely racist, though the justification was made easier by racial bigotry. Slavery was an accepted economic condition, and much of the slave trade was in Africans selling for export other Africans who were already slaves. And if you're talking about more recent vitriol, I'd suggest you surf the web. I grew up in the Deep South of the U.S. in the 50's and 60's, and some of what's on some of these sites would make those old peckerwoods from my youth blush.

MOST white people did and still do consider themselves to be superior. But it wasnt just white people. It's a shame, really. I hate racism. Why can't we just all get along. As a puerto rican, dominican, native american and french girl, I've been the subject of many mean remarks. We need to embrace our diversity. It's what makes each of us unique. I realize I probably didnt give the answer you were looking for but I just had to vent because the topic bothers me so much. Everyone, be proud of who you are and remember that others have a right to be proud of who they are too!

People then and now are fearful of anyone and anything that is in any way different looking than what they are used to. Change scares most people. Here in Kentucky our Mexican people are over-worked,underpaid, and said to be dirty, womanizing, alcoholics. Yet they are the race that takes the hard labor jobs that all of the other races are to lazy to do.. Our asian races are not treated much better at least not behind their backs. I am a white female BUT was introduced to the real world when i was blessed with my japanese-american daughter. I never knew how much racial slurrs hurt .You know the moment you pass someone and you can hear the slantedeye, rice eating, comments. And children are very cruel but we all know that they are learning their behavior from mom and dad. All of us must get past black slavery, the hate of the vietnamese people because of the vietnam war, blacks enslaving blacks in Africa, everyones total disrespect of the American Indian. We all must learn from the past but we seem to be beating a dead horse to death. Instead of having pride for a certain race day. Let us bring our towns together certain days of the year maybe one or two. And somehow get our races out of their safety shells. Let's mix and mingle and let all of our children play together. All of us citizens could chip in buffett style like with chips or baked beans,a 2 liter of coke etc... I am certain that politicians, churches, and others would help fund and volunteer for this. We must try with all of our might to destroy all of the racism that is so strongly harming all of us and our children.

My theory is that black inferiority was a "big lie," to keep the blacks down after slavery. Blacks on the plantation were highly skilled workers and whites were afraid of the competition. Of note is that well into this century there were no formal prisons as such in the south. They just had work camps to reenslave blacks on trumped up charges.

I think the reason is that because of the difference in skin color the whites felt that they were superior to the African Americans. Also, I think that it may be because Africa wasn't as advanced as the rest of the world which may have led to the feeling that Africans were primitive people.

I think that they had to hate to justify slavery to themselves.
They had to believe that black people were not human and therefore they could treat them inhumanely, like chattel.
I think this disrespect for human life and dignity caused great hatred (internally and externally).

All the previous answers are wrong.
The answer to your question is simple.
Whites believed that black people were not humans, and that God had nothing to do with them...because of this, they were regarded as animals.

Many were poor and uneducated. People don't like those that are different from them. That situation, as we see today, has not changed.
