Give them nick-names too remember it, if its appropriate or just say it over and over in your head while you first talk to them and learn something unique, about them if you can or make up something unique. I would often teach management classes and have to learn 30 or more different peoples names every couple of days. Lets say there is joe and he has a mole on nose thats how you remember him, or karyn has three kids one girl is my age, karyn is cute so karyn has the hot daughter my age. Like i said anything as stupid as it may seem, but meaningful to you. You will remeber about 90% of those names that way.

Repeat the name as soon as you've heard it, as mentioned above. Sometimes when I meet a new person, I forget the name shortly after meeting. It's better to just ask for it again than try to go on pretending that you still know it. You can just say, "Now, sorry, what was your name again?" You can also say the person's name right at the end of the conversation: "Bye, Steve!"

Associate something about the person with the name. Say, for example, that you meet a woman named Susan Green, and she has green eyes. You can make a mental note of that. Then when you see her, you'll remember green eyes, and that will help you remember her name.

When you see the person again, ask them a question. While they are answering, you'll have more time to remember their name. You can even ask a question about the context where you previously met. Remembering things from that context might help you remember the name. If you think you aren't going to remember, it's good to ask early in the conversation, though: "I'm sorry, I remember meeting you at Biff's party, but I don't remember your name."

I like the writing down idea, too. It helps me to remember something if I see it.

In Blast from the Past, Brendan Frasier said something about repeating someone's name when you first meet/greet them and it'll help you remember.

I've tried this a couple of times, makes it a little easier.

Ex.
Man 1: Hi, I'm Stewie.

Man 2: Hi, Stewie, I'm Brian.

Ok, now I know people don't really talk like this, but you get the point.

when you first meet them, repeat it when they tell you their name. call them by their name a couple of times.

also you can try a mental trick - look at them and think of a visual joke that goes with their name. for instance if their name is Rusty, imagine them as a rusty old robot. whatever is memorable to you.
