Don't you think you want to buy your kid a reliable car instead of wasting money on a sport car? That could be extra money for your kid's tuition. But if you have to buy the kid a car that would most likely get wrecked, buy a Ford Mustang. It's a sports car and you can get the option of picking a convertible. It's probably no more than $23,000, if it's a bottom-of-the-line model.

You have a great number of choices, new or used. A sensible choice. Scion tC or Acura RSX, CIVIC Coupe, Nissan 350Z, Corolla Sport, Mazda 5-Miata, Solstice, Mini Cooper, BMW 3 series, or Lexus IS 350, boxter, Honda S2000. If money is not a concern, S2000. Have fun.. just remember that there are insurance which can be very expensive for a sports vehicle and a teen. Good luck and have fun..

None. A teen entering college should not even have any kind of car. They are a distraction. Without cars, freshmen are grounded and are therefore more likely to spend time on studies, rather than running around with the top down.

I had a convertible when I was in college. I wish now that I did not.

264HP, Hid Headlights, Led Taillights, Limited Slip Differential, TCS, 6 speed short throw shifter... the list goes on.
All for only 22k.
Should at least be worth checking out.

A Subaru WRX STI is a wonderful choice. Or, if you'd like all the power, with a bit more class, get a BMW M3. The BMW will out perform the subaru definately.

New or used? A true sports car, one that will do many things well (in competition and on the street)hands down, no equal, is a Z06 Corvette. Refined and brutal in one package. '01 $25k , another choice is a S2000 from Honda, over-engineered in many places, bullet proof in others, fun too.

The BMW-M3 would be my choice. It's a sporty, classy car suitable for your son's age and in the price range you mentioned.
