In all actuality, artists don't really make as much money as you would be led to believe. At least not off of album sales. Most of the revenue off the average CD purchase goes right back to the label, not to mention managers, tour managers, A&R Reps, producers, mixers, engineers, publicists, PR people and anyone else involved in the making of the disc. Artists aren't losing as much money as the RIAA would like people to think.

A substantial amount of the money that artists make comes from merch and touring. Consequently, if I enjoy a band, I'll make sure to do so while I'm at a show, where I know more money will actually go into the bands' collective pockets.

Because most music made today sucks, and it's ridiculous to pay $15-$20 for a CD with one or two decent songs.
Having said that, I do support artists that put out good work. I've actually bought multiple copies of good CDs to support my fave bands.

When artists make cd's that are all good music instead of one good song and the other stuff is crap, maybe people will buy them. Also, why should people feel bad for the artist when record companies keep 90% of the cd profits?

Because it is easy and people don't think they will get caught. When they see artists driving around in brand new expensive automobiles, wearing diamonds everywhere, wearing the finest clothes, they don't feel guilty about taking it.

The Greatful Dead encouraged people to copy their music and bootleg their concerts. They still made plenty of money. I don't do it, but I understand it.

Michelle F is right.

I will buy a CD if I think it is amazing. I'll download the songs first to give it a try and if it is worth buying, I'll buy it.
