White smoke is Water, Steam.... Like the other person has stated already headgasket most likely.... Unless it a Turbo engine then Turbo coolant line can cause it also...

BLUE smoke is Oil burning, Valves, valve guide seals, rings, etc.

Dark gray is Steam and Oil mixed, Not able to burn fuel off.

Black is Fuel... Running to rich...

Man do I have a story about White smoke out of an engine...

Good Luck...

I have to agree with 'plysocr'. White smoke is either antifreeze or trans fluid. oil causes blue smoke, not white, and rich mixture of fuel causes black smoke. The easiest check is to watch for any fluid loss in either of the two sources. The head gasket isn't the only place it can have a problem though, there is still the intake gasket that transferes fuel, air, and coolant. See if there is a vacuum hose going from the transmission to the intake, and if there is one then check the hose for fluid. that will tell if the problem is there. Otherwise you may want to look at a compression test to determine where the leak may be. Check the spark plugs for a white collor on electrodes(side within engine) and for a sweet scent.

some good answers here.It may be a blown head gasket or
If the car has a automatic transmission it could have a bad
modulator which will suck auto transmission fluid into the engine causing white smoke. To check for a blown head gasket pull the dip stick out and see if its foamy or milky. You can also take the valve cover oil cap off and look at it for those same signs.
Now Remember if you have oil in the radiator the head is cracked,if you have water/antifreeze in the oil its a blown head gasket.Just a blown head gasket will not allow oil to get into your radiator.A crack in the cylinder head can let anti freeze into the radiator.

It sounds more like the head gasket or the sift modulator. The modulator is located on the side of the transmission pan.It has a vacuum hose connected to it.Remove the two bolts and the hose if oil come out of it its bad.Its a very simple repair to do.

The rings are going and it needs a ring job; as in expensive.

What is the oil pressure on the car?

Could be coolant too

If it is bluish white it is an oil problem ( seals or rings probably )/ if it is white white ( head gasket probably ), also water dripping out of exhaust pipe.
