i could use some help. do they look different?

It's just the earlobe (that soft part they usually pierce) Attached earlobes are usually smaller, and they attach to the side of the face pretty far down on the side. Free earlobes dangle down, and there's space between them, and the side of the face until the lobe connects with the cartillage (hard) part of the ear that you stick your ipod buds into.

Free earlobes is a dominant trait and attached earlobes is a recessive trait. For a picture of the differences between the two, go here:

People with free ears have a dangling ear loeb. Attached are just that...attached. Does this answer your question?

It is meant in reference to the earlobe. Attached earlobes and free earlobes. Its genetic and you can usually tell which is which by looking at it.
