I actually saw a show about this not too long ago. In many countries cousins do marry. Statically marrying your cousin shouldn't increase your chances of having a special needs child. The reason it appears to happen more often is not so much that the parents are cousins but that if there is a genetic defect on both parents sides it increases the offsprings chances of developing that genetic defect. If the parents are related then they both may carry that particular gene. In the future they will be more testing that will be able to warn such couples of any genes that they need to worry about. So you actually could have the same result marrying a stranger as a cousin. If you are aware of some genetic defect in your family I would definately think twice about having children with your cousin. I hope this helps you. You didn't mention which country you lived in? In the USA and Europe it's not really a socially accepted practice. Something else to think about. Good Luck ;o)

Talk to a Genetic Councillor.

I do know of a couple who got married who are cousins(her father is the brother of his mother), they decided not to have any children themselves, but have adopted two.

I believe that 3rd cousins can legally marry in some states, however any closer relation than that and you are bound to have some genetic issues not to mention overall ick.

2nd cousins or more distant are generally safe to mate, assuming it's not a recurring theme with one or both sides of the family.

1st Cosign or closer have a much higher probability of genetic disorders and retardation.

if your asking me personally i would tell you no its not a problem as a muslim you can marry your cousin ALTHOUGH its better not too cause it increases the possibilty for your childs of having genetics disease but if you ask my christian wife she would say NO!! you can not marry your cousin based on her believes and religon.
