I was on the depo shot for about a year. My peiod went away the next month. After 8 months on the shot I bled for about 40 days. I took my last shot in May. 3 months later I bled for 6 weeks and now nothing. I have been waiting almost 2 months for another period and it doesn't show any signs of coming back. Has this happened to anyone else?
While on the depo shot I gained about 5lbs every week. My migranes increased (they were already bad to begin with). I went to my doctor ever month or so because something was always hurting but all my bloodwork always came back okay. Even though I would feel worse and worse I never went back to the doctor about my problems because I didnt want them to think I was a hypochondriac. Now that I am off the shot I am fine. My OBGYN says that I should have never been on it. I say if you feel abnormal or your body hurts while you are on the shot please go to your OBGYN and tell him/her it might be the shot.

I was on Depo Provera for about a year back in 1993 after the birth of my daughter. In that time I became hypothyroid and gained about 100 lbs. It took me years to recover to the point of getting my hormones balanced, and the weight under control.

What I've learned in that time from talking to others, and from doctors here in Israel is that Depo is hit and miss. It's actually something that no ethical doctor would give to a woman without a full physical, and blood tests to see if there was any hormonal imbalance at all, including TSH and T-4. If you are even close to borderline hypothyroid, you should not be on Depo Provera.

Another thing they don't tell you is that if you have ever had any problems whatsoever with the pill, you should not be on Depo Provera. You should not be on Depo Provera while you are nursing, because your hormones are different while you're lactating than when you're not. You'll either start getting messed up from it during, or after you stop, depending on how your body handles changes.

Here in Israel, doctors only prescribe Depo Provera for some types of post menopausal problems, or if a girl is mentally ill in some way and keeps having babies out of wedlock or something...only extreme cases. The side effects are not rare.

A doctor friend of mine started getting ads and promotional mail to convince him to start prescribing Depo. He laughed and tore it up, and called some friends to see if they got it too. They did the same thing.

They are aware that Depo was pushed mostly on military wives, women soldiers, teenagers, and poor women. It's marketed aside of that, but not as heavily as towards the target groups. It's obviously one of those social management things, not a public health things. They don't recommend it to you if they are worried about your future fertility or your health.

Ladies, do not take this stuff. If you're on it, talk to your doctor as soon as possible about getting off of it. Don't let them convince you to stay on it or to take another shot.

my daughter was on the depo shot for a couple yrs and its really messed her up. she has been off it for about 1 yr or 2 and she may have a period once every 5 or 6 months if that. she has tryed to get pregnant and cant. i think the depo shots are a bad thing. it stopping your body from doing what it is suppose to do naturally. and now my daughter feels she will not have anymore kids because of it. get off the depo and go to something else where you can have your period regularly so hopefully it can straighten itself out. also my niece was on it a year and she has same problem as my daughter. and both of them never had a problem till they took the shot. get off it now. use something else i cant stress that enough.

With depo this is normal from what the dr told me, I was one of the lucky ones that didn't ever have a period, but my best friend had the problem you are having. Even after getting off the shot you can go for up to a year with out getting a "normal" period. You can still get pregnant though! As for you OB dr I don't understand why they would say that, until you have taken it to see how it affects you there is no way to tell what your reaction will be.

Actually, I had the opposite reaction to taking depo. I was having horrendous periods that never seemed to end and when I started taking the depo my periods stopped altogether. Frankly it was quite a relief. I've been on it now for three years and haven't tried coming off it. I have gained some weight but I think that's related to my love of fast food, more so than the medication...lol.

I had my first child June 03 and I went on the depo at my 6 week check up and then when I went off the needle my cycles went crazy, I went off in August 04 and got a period Feb 05 and then nothing again until Aug 05 and I slowly started getting my period monthly again.

Those shot suck, I never felt so bad in my life. I was on them for a year. My periods may have lasted like 2-3 weeks and I would never know when one would start or end. STAY AWAY FROM DEPO!!

Oh my GOD!!! Yeah depo sucks for reals! I just got back on it in september and still no period but plenty o' pounds on my body!! Last year i was on depo too (been switching on and off cuz my man was deployed so id get off the birth control) and i bled for like my first three months straight!! I dont know whats up with the depo i know it works but at a super high cost to our own bodies. I think its just soo convinient that I dont bother to think about what it could be doing to my body. Wanna get off of it too but dont like other options...but i am considering that u know the little y that last for like 5 years....i'll see how that goes! Oh and i get crazy bipolar type mood swings, blaming the depo but not sure..hehehehe

i was on the shot for about a year too! my periods completely disappeared the whole time, and i didn't come back until about 3 months after my last shot and then i started getting it for about a week and then nothing for a week and so on for almost 2 months! wasn't fun! i would never go back on it as nice as it was not having a period at all for over a year! i also heard that it decreases bone density not something i need when osteoporosis already runs in my family!
