The Australian-made vehicle " Holden VE Commodore" has been nominated for the World Car of the Year (WCOTY) Awards 2007. It was nominated by the Australian WCOTY jury member and respected motoring journalist, Bill McKinnon.
WCOTY winner is judged on criteria such as styling, performance, handling, comfort and utility. In addition, cars will be assessed with respect to value, safety and environmental responsibility, significance and their emotional appeal.
GM Holden company developed such car at a cost of more than $1 billion. The Commodore is sold in Australia and exported to countries including New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Yemen, Lebanon, Oman, Fiji and South Africa. Such export made it eligible for nomination complying one of the rules of being a new car with availability in a minimum of five countries on at least two continents.
The Holden VE Commodore was first officially presented at a media launch in Melbourne, Australia on July 16, 2006,and debuted in August 2006 as Holden's first Commodore ever to be built upon an entirely new design, rather than based on another platform. The VE Commodore was launched in New Zealand in September 2006.
Other cars in the final list out of 28 participants include models from Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Citroen, Jeep, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo and Honda. The Award winner will be announced at the New York International Auto Show in April 2007.☺
