I'm currently pregnant with my second child.. Just when I thought I knew what it was all about I get told about Afterbirth pain with other labours (after the first, so second, third etc)
Is this true and if so, how painful can it be?
Eep,
Scared mummy.

Oh, I'm sorry.. I didn't mean Afterbirth as in the placenta.. lol. Sorry.
My friend called it "after-birth pain" She said something about your uterus shrinking and contracting back into shape. And they also said it never happened with first children, only consecutive births.

hiya after pains do tend to happen when you have had more than 1 baby, they feel like contractions, if you breast feed they can be painful but that's because when you breastfeed the uterus contracts back to size quicker, after my last baby #4 they hurt alot but only when i fed my daughter and they only lasted about a day or 2, but i found i was so happy id had my baby a little pain was worth it.
a couple of paracetamol and you ll be just fine,
dont ya just love our " friends " always full of horror stories about birth and how bad it is after!!!!

I didn't have any pain after my first pregnancy/birth. During delivery, i remember the midwife saying once the baby is out then the pain will go away. Well she lied!!!! I had extreme bouts of pain similar to contractions, it did only last a few days and it happened more when i was breast feeding. It is the uterus returning to normal size. I also had them after my third. Pain medications did help and heat packs. I guess it couldn't have been too bad cause I'm having number 4. You may not get them, everyone is different.

The afterbirth is just the delivery of the placenta and the rest of the umbilical cord. There might be a few contractions, but it's over quickly and soon after the baby comes. I don't even remember it happening after having either of my two kids.

Depends on the person. Mine was with my second. If you are talking about afterbirth as in NOT the placenta and all that.
I was in the hospital for 3 days and I had mild cramps and sometimes what felt like mild contractions.

Dont get scared dear, u hv done it once! Yes there is after birth pain with 2nd and subsequent deliveries! actually the uterine contractions continue for atleast 3 days but not as frequent. they can be uncomfortable but not all that bad.

I just remember it as one or two contractions that my body had to help it pass. And then was so happy watching my daughter I didnt even notice it really other then hearing the doctor say it was out. If you didnt have any with your first child I doubt you would notice it with your second sham on your friends for trying to scare you.

It isn't a myth. Your uterus contracts, returning to its normal size, eventually. It is perfectly normal. Bad cramps, your doctor gives something for it.

It is true, I had them after my first and second, they are like bad period cramps but compared to labour, its not that bad!!!
The nurses will give you painkillers anyway, if they are too bad.
Dont worry, you have done it once
