Or would you be disappointed if you didn't get at least one expensive Christmas gift this year?

Money seems to be tight this year, and you always want to give a loved one something nice, and while holiday shopping you really don't think about receiving. Or I don't anyway. So, if someone took the time to pick out something for me based on my likes and it was cheap, I would love it more than a $50 gift certificate. Why? Because they actually pay attention to me, and know me well enough to make me smile with their gift. And that is my intention for every one on my list. So, in answer to your question; yes, I think it is the thought that counts. Although some people who have the money to lavish there loved ones with gifts, they also put thought into what they buy, they just have the money to reach higher. They shouldn't be looked down upon for that, us less advantaged people just wish we could do that. Expensive doesn't mean less thought. Sometimes it could even mean more thought. One Christmas, all I wanted was a guitar, very pricey, and I knew that my mom couldn't afford, so I never asked. Everything in me was screaming with desire: have to play a guitar, want a guitar. My mom knew that, and she really surprised me when I woke up and there was one setting under the tree with a bow on it. It was the most precious gift I got because it came right from her heart.
The meaning of 'it's the thought that counts' is just as it reads, you put a lot of thought into any gift, and it counts.

No it really is the thought that counts. There is nothing worse to me than getting a gift that had NO THOUGHT behind it - expensive or cheap. I would rather have a really great card that someone took time and picked out with me in mind - than a very expensive present that some stranger told you was the "IT" thing to buy this Christmas.

I never get anything expensive for christmas :( its the price that counts but the price is always low for the gifts I get if I get any this year. Christmas is way too overrated. I don't care I'll be happy just seeing the rocky movie if its out on that day.

It is the thought that counts. I would be just as happy with $5 gift
as I would be with a $5,000 gift as long as it is from the heart.

well money is tight not only in my house but with my friends as well. i really do think it is the thought that counts. my got friend got me a huge bag of peanut butter m&ms for my birthday once. she was short on money (very short) but she knew they were my favorite candy so it meant something that she took time to buy somthing i really liked. but then again i'm a simple person.
i wont turn down an expensive gift though; just not raised on having to have a coslty present.

I think Christmas is too commercialized and overated and has lost it`s meaning. So the answer is no. Our entire family is not going to be giving gifts this year. We have decided to do something else instead.

I cherish the gesture, and making the effort earns you mega brownie points... but honestly... I would have rather been given the expensive gift... I won't tell you for a few months... I will hold it in till you mess up, then I will throw it in your face and make you feel worse... so... spare yourself the agony and break the bank...

in my house, only the children get real gifts. My husband and I either take a weekend getaway at new years or if we exchange gifts it is something small and sentimental.

YES! If you give me a scarf, I would like it, because you spent the time to go to the store and pick it out for ME.

If a little kid had $50, and only spent $5 of it on you, would you be mad at that little kid because he didn't spend all of his money on one present for you? I hope you're not a snob.
