freshly ejacuated sperm are unlikely to fertilize an egg (although it's not impossible). They must typically undergo a process called capacitation, which involves lipid and molecular changes that would take a lot of space to detail, which happens while they are kicking around inside the woman. This process can be duplicated in the lab by putting the sperm in certain fertile media (for test tube kids). It typically takes several hours either way.
Those quickest to complete this process are the most likely to nail the egg if the woman is spot-on ovulation wise, and they are more likely to be the sperm that produce male offspring (they are faster) if the woman is a day or two from ovulation, the sperm that produce female offspring are more likely to burrow into the egg (they live longer).
Once the sperm gets to the egg, it doesn't take more than a minute or a few for it to penetrate the outer membrane, basically implode inside and mix it's genetic material with that of the egg, which immediately restructures its outer membrane to prevent the entry of more sperm.

A woman and a man with perfectly functioning reproductive systems who are not using protection, and who are having sex around the time of ovulation, only have a 25% chance of becoming pregnant every month. Most sexually active couples without any types of fertility problems will conceive within a year.
