In this modern world, a leader need to be educated. especially with so much ministerial dialogues between state leaders on all matters of mutual importance. Do we expect an uneducated leader to understand the ill-effects of climate change, international trade imbalance, inflation & deflation. Would they understand a virus that recently infect my computer?
Moreover, there are more educated people today than yesterdays where education were confined mostly to monarchs and their families.

Machiavellian thoughts are not very applicable in a modern democracy (note democracy), a leader should have a thorough education in political science (preferably masters or PhD), but at the same time in most countries (especially the US) leaders have so many advisors and cronies and graphs and reports and aides that they could pretty much know nothing and get the job done (Dubya kinda disporves that theory....)But no longer does a leader have to be as fierce as a lion, or as clever as a fox, only informed and relatively decisive.

A broad-based education might help a leader to learn to communicate with more people across different sects of society.
Basic skills in reading, math, science, history, etc. are all very useful in relating to people, their various roles in society, and their experiences in different cultures around the world.
A formal education would also give a leader the experience of how a school operates as an institution, which serves as a basic model for organizing communities locally as well as for connecting people worldwide by their fields of study or interest.
As for wisdom, character and conscience, good leadership skills can be developed independently of formal or higher education. I would rather seek the guidance of Buddha and Jesus, who did not have college degrees but whose teachings have shaped the course of history, rather than listen to well-educated politicians today who may boast of their credentials, but use that to pursue self-serving interests instead of what is best for the public good.

Its better if they are educated. Cause education opens eyes for himself and he can decide whats good or bad by his own, and not taking advice from others, which may be sometimes misleading. Most importantly they should have vision and values.
