Why on so many sites do people lump gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered and questioning people together when each group already has so much diversity and complexity within their own group? Why the need to complicate things even more?
I mean it just fuels stereotypes that gay men want to be girls, that bisexuals are still 'questioning' and that maybe lesbians really are just guys! I think we should stop clashing gender and sexual orientation together so much as that's still a very biased and heterosexual way to look at things. (ie 'who gets to play the 'man' in the relationship.')
Why not just call us all 'non-straight?' or something? I know this is just a matter of semantics but it's always bugged me.

OMG- HALLELUJAH!!!! Finally, a voice of reason!!!
I am a MtF transsexual, I am not a gay man, I am not a gay man who wants to "legitimize" "his" attraction to men. I have never understood men, never felt like one of them.
To call me gay is to call me a lesbian, which is also something I am not. I know a few lesbians, and they think I am just a "man" who is trying to invade "womyn" space- EEWWWW!!! YUCK!! I am most certainly NOT a man- pleas don't remind me of my physical deformities- I am already painfully aware of them.
It's almost like they took a bunch of labels- stuck them in a bag, shook them up ,and dumped them on us- whatever stuck MUST be what we are, right?
That is wrong on so many levels.

Why on earth would putting transgender people in with LGB people "fuel stereotypes... that bisexuals are still 'questioning'", etc??? That makes absolutely no sense! The reason we feel that transgender people are a part of the LGBT community is that they are also discriminated against for many of the same reasons and by many of the same people as other queer people!
Contrary to it complicating things more, unfortunately, it's actually your attitude that causes negative consequences. The only way we're ever going to defeat the discrimination that ALL OF US face is by sticking together! How can we expect the rest of society to respect and accept us if we can't respect and accept each other?

They get lumped in the same category because many transsexuals get discriminated against by the homophobic majority in the same manner as lesbians, gays, and bisexuals. In the eyes of the homophobics, transsexuals, along with the other three, are all just a bunch of [insert insult.] Also, 'transgendered' also refers to 'gender identity disorder' where a boy, for example, may express a wish to be a girl and assert that they will grow up to be a woman. In that case, if the boy does "become a female," if he dates males prior to his "sex change," he can still be considered gay considering he never changed his sex biologically. I guess the 'transgendered' label for LGBT was not intended to include people born with transsexualism, but rather healthy males or females that desire a "sex change."

Yes! Let's all separate and form our own separate groups and try to fight for survival in very intolerant societies, just like the various enemies of the Third Reich. Those groups did really well at gaining acceptance, NOT! We face similar enemies and are fighting for some of the same things, so how about standing together? Straight allies don't have much in common with the GLBT community, but we still accept them into our larger group (I'm refering to the A in GLBTQQIA.)

I agree somewhat. But I think it's sort of a "united against a common enemy" thing. Gay-bashing and trans-bashing are perpetrated by the same people, the discrimination we each face stems from the same source, and we're both small minorities. So we wound up just pooling our resources, not caring that it fed the stereotypes.
