garlic and horseradish tablets are great for runny noses, dries you right up. Thry a cough suppressant syrup.

I am 50 years old and allergic to dust, dust mites, polen and a few other things for the last 30 years.
Tried everything. EVERYTHING.
Allergy has no cure.
But we can learn what makes us sick and try to avoid it.
On my case, is runny and itchy nose, every one of the 365 days, no matter the weather.
Tired of doctors not finding a better solution and only prescribing the most expensive drugs, which did not work but was a good learning experience, I started to experiment with the over the counter more affordable ones and found that a plain antihystanine with no pain/cough reliever were the safest.
Stay away from cold medicine which works on allergy too but contains tons of stuff you don't need and if you take for long time, since allergy will go on for life, you can kill yourself. I almost blew up my heart with cold medicine. Get the simpliest drug possibe, just for one effect, antihystamine only, no multi-symptons.
Nowadays I take one 4 mg pill of Chorpheniramine maleate a day, in the morning before breakfast, even if I am OK, as a precaution because if the nose starts bothering me then it will take much much longer for a drug to work. Sometimes I can skip a dose, but normally the pill is necessary if I want freedom.
This drug is standard and available under many brands even supermarkets like Safeway. I usually buy Wallgreens or Brooks, a bottle of 100 pils for about 7 bucks. The dosage is no more than a pill every 4 hours, so I take only one a day, I should be happy.
I've been doing this now for many, may years with no side effects. Just a good working nose.
Recently moved from Massachusetts to central Arizona, and I hope the warmer weather will allow me to stop medication completelly soon, since here is less humid and it's easier to keep the house free of molds. Dust will still have, but much drier.
Hate my noze.
But I never give up hope.
It's not what is going to kill me.
Good luck.

Visit www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk. They have lots of really good, practical health advice - and it's a trustworthy source, unlike any old Tom, Dick, or Harry who could answer your question on Yahoo Answers :)

By the way, if runny nose and cough are your only symptoms, I would get pretty mad at anyone who tried to give you antibiotics. You may just have a cold, or perhaps a mild allergy. Common colds (a) don't require any specific treatment - only symptomatic treatment is needed; (b) don't get better with antibiotics anyway. The cause of the common cold is a virus; we don't have any drugs that can kill the virus. Antibiotics kill bacteria; the common cold is not caused by bacteria. People who give out antibiotics for problems that don't need antibiotics are helping to breed antibiotic-resistant bacteria. If we get many more resistant bacteria, we could start to see deaths from infectious diseases returning to the terribly high levels of 70 or 80 years ago. Lecture over :)

Drink plenty of fluids, take a multivitamin, maybe a little extra Zinc and Vitamin C and rest, rest, rest. Try an over the counter cold remedy like Dayquil, Theraflu or Alka-Seltzer Cold. Spicy foods seem to help me out when I have a cold. If you don't like spicy food, try to find Cayenne pepper and garlic tablets at a health food store. Chicken soup never hurt, either. Don't bother with homeopathic remedys, or overpriced vitamins such as Emergen-C or Airborne, they dont work any better than a good multivitamin. Try soaking in a hot bath or taking a hot shower to soothe your throat and sinuses. And you are right, stay away from antibiotics! Realize when you get a cold or the flu, your life is going to be miserable for a few days no matter what.

when i first start to feel crummy, i sometimes take echinechea, which is a natural herb that can be bought cheaply in grocery stores, walmart, etc. that has seemed to be helpful in preventing me from getting sick. however, if you have allergies, i dont know if it will work on that, but i would say as long as u arent allergic to it, give it a try but especially at the first signs of feeling like a cold is coming on. vicks applied under the nose can help w/congestion and a mixture of honey and lemon that you can make yourself and spoon feed yourself slowly can help w/the coughing too. cure it? i dont know, but soothe it, yes, it should. good luck

Antibiotics only work on bacteria; they don't work on viruses.
Wait out the cold and take something to releive the symptoms.
