We started by providing air and logistic support to the French fighting to keep their colony. According to the Geneva Accords signed by France and the Viet Minh afterwards the North and South would remain separate (17 degrees latitude) but hold democratic elections in 1956. The North elected Ho Chi Minh but the U.S. called off the elections in the South (Eisenhower knew that Ho Chi Minh would be elected there too) and helped create the Republic of South Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh had traveled to France in 1919 and appealed to the Versailles Conference to bring an end to all colonialism but was rebuffed. He didn't turn to Marxism until later.

It basically stems from the cold war & the spread of communism under the auspice of China & then Soviet Union.

The US & many countries were at that time very scared of the domino effect (where the countries fall under communist rule one after another) & wanted very much to prevent that from happening.

Judging from US intervention in the Middle East & Afghanistan, there didn't seem to be any major transformation of American politics but it does glaringly show the social divisions within the American society.
