I have a hyper active mind. I rarely think only about one thing at a time and when I'm down to one thing it's often only a brief interval while something else perculates off in the sub-concious.
While in those slow modes I am mentally stalking my environment for a source of topic. It might be a trophy which leads me to considering the sport the trophy was for or the manufacture process of the trophy. It might be how the trophy is attached to the wall and the construction of the wall and how it could have been down better with different materials or techniques. Maybe it's a tree by the road in those rare cases I'm a passenger. I might consider how that tree got there. If it's in a hurricane prone area how strong was the storm that last passed there. How high did the water get in this area. I'll consider the asthetics of the tree. Wonder how many animals have made a home in that tree.. Is it an indigenous species, what would the land have looked like 100 years ago. I'll picture riding horseback through an unspoiled land populated by trees like that. Then I'll invent a story about the tree. Maybe of lovers who used the tree as a landmark 60 years ago. Maybe the tree was the last resting place of a weary warrior who laid down to die there. The limbs becoming the gallow for an unlucky outlaw or the leaves adorning the hopeful pioneer as they came out this way. Ten seconds later it might be a bridge that catches my eye and I repeat the process of exploring it's construction, potential history, asthetics, analyze it up and down and invent stories about how it came to be and what events happened on, under or around it.
Told you I have a hyper mind :) I even analyzed why you might have asked this question. Pictured idle thoughts about a fall day. More experience than actual analytical thought. Maybe wandering in a park. Analyzed the concept of idle thought itself. Came up with two story ideas based on past scenary that lept into my mind and also considered the slim odds of winning best answer with my rather verbose and semi-erratic approach to to idle thought.

When I have to think about nothing, like during meditation. I think of a blank piece of paper with no lines, writing, or anything on it. If my thoughts start to drift then I refocus back on that blank page.
What do you think about?

I clear my mind. Put it in the alpha-state. I do breath counting. Inhale, exhale, let it out, that's one. Take it in again, count 2, on the exale.
It's alot like putting the computer on stand-by. It works, it's invigorating, restorative and healing, and it don't take alot of energy to start it back up again.
When I do, everything just works better. Om!

Stare at a candle flame, in a dark room, for about 5min. That is one of the easiest ways to learn how to clear your mind.

I just stare, listen, and let my physical senses rule for that peaceful moment my mind rests.
