I think the media has a negative affect on Rap music. They are offended by their apperance. So I think The media classify rappers as "Gangstas" because of their apperance. And What they rap about, half the rappers today may say they are gangsta, but they would not actually go out and do some of the stuff they speak on the microphone. Gangstas have no lives they have no record deal, but why do people say that the music industry is over ran by "gangstas"?

So many rappers portray themselves to be gangsters so the what a lot people assume rappers have to be. A lot of new rappers come out like that and they make hit records; people are afraid to be original and be themselves. Now Lupe Fiasco is a rapper but definitely not a gangster and he makes good music. He stepped away from the crowd and hasn't jumped on the band wagon.

i think alot of the new rap takes away from the artform of flowing and such. It somewhat shows a lack of creativity and ability to flow about something and becomes like an ego type of thing where they just rap about how tough they are....if u listen to older rap (more original east coast stuff), the lyrics are much more political. There are also several types of rappers as well. There are individuals that have actually been through the tough life and those that have not but try to portray that image. Strange movie to bring up but CB4 actually has some truth to it.

They are linked quite often because of this....R&B and hip hop originated as a political statement. It goes all the way back to the days of motown music.....and racial tensions. Motown was considered somewhat of a taboo...and motown artists did not receive the same "perks" that their white counterparts did...they didn't get studio time and barely made money off of the albums that they sold. Elvis actually was the one that brought R&B into the mainstream...even he was seen as someone that caused contraversy though. It has always been seen as a style of music that was urban and kind of "bad" or rebellious.

Gangsta rap started out moreso once NWA hit the music scene....introducing a new element into the hip hop scene. They did change it but I am not sure if it was in a positive form. If you listen to groups such as cl smooth, tribe, erik b and rakim, etc....the songs are VERY different than alot of the west coast gangsta stuff....

Media does somewhat stereotype...People group the two types of rap and hip hop together but do not look at the lyrics, the statements being made and the history of the music. More just that it's just considered the same genre so it's the same thing....also, when groups such as 2 live crew and nwa cause such contraversy, that's what sticks out and that's what people remember....same thing as any other form of entertainment. Not all rappers consider themselves "gangsta" rappers though....you are solely looking at a certain group of rappers.

sorry for the history lesson haha....hope this answers somewhat?

Because a lot of them call themselves so, and to the non-rap-fan public, it is just easier to lump them into a category and let it go at that. I'm not saying it's right, but that's the way it often is.

I'd say its because of exactly what you outlined in your question, the rappers portray themselves as ganstas and act like they are and thats all the public see's so thats why they are considered the same thing. wasn't that 50 cent guy shot like nine times well thats pretty "gangsta" ain't it. to bad they people that shot him couldn't shot worth a dam they could of done us all a favour.

that is not true. because not all rappers are "gangstas" they think that if they
say that they are gangstas they think it will
give them more street cred i guess. music industry is not jus over run by gangstas all other types of artist are
taking over. they just rapp about stuff like that
because it will boost sales of their latest cd.

Because of the way most of them talk, their lingo and the words in the songs or rather most of the songs. Plus,They dress like gangsters, talk like gangsters, look like gangsters. If it talks a duck, looks like a duck and sounds like a duck it is probably a duck.
