It depends on the type of bird, but there are only two ways to tell for sure.
The first is to have a DNA test done on the bird. You'll get the results back in about a week or so and the test is inexpensive.
The second takes longer, but it's free. Wait and see if the bird lays eggs. Again, depending on the species of the bird, this can take anywhere from 2 to 6 years.

what kind of bird???? most parrots you cannot tell unless you have them DNA or surgically sexed. Eclectus you can tell by the colors, males are bright green and females are bright red and purple. the only way to know for sure is a dna test. in song birds the females are generally duller and the males are brighter and prettier.

We have two small cockatiels. The male bird is colorful and the female is plain looking..black and white. This is what the store told us too.

It all depends on what sort of bird it is, but usually the prettier looking ones are males.

depending on the type of bird that it is/most times the male will have more color to it because they want to strut their stuff for the female

it depends on the species of bird. usually its just the color pattern of the feathers or other characteristics like beak or bill size.

some birds you can tell by just looking at them like budgies,eclectus etc... others need a blood test.

If its a budgie you look at their beak. If its light colored its a female and if its dark colored its a male.

generally the male has a more vibrant color to its feathers.
