Is there a way to find out who someone is chatting with?

I've seen software that will tell you who someone is chatting with or who they are emailing. Is there someway you can find this out without installing something on their computer or asking them like spyware and what really works?

To monitor another PC, you HAVE TO install something in their computer. Depending on how sophisticated the software is, there's sometimes an invisible mode.

I've yet to find a free one. Look up the software ACTMON
