My son is 9 months and he keeps throwing himself back. If I tell him no try to sit him up...he throws his head back and has a fit. He screams and crys without the tears. I don't know what to do, but it gets so frustrating especially in public.

that is just something that babies do when they are mad. the best thing to do is not get frustrated with him that will only make it worse. dont worry it is only a phase, not the throwing fits, but throwing themselves back. just tell him in a calm firm voice that it is not okay to do that, babies understand more than you think they do.

He's displaying a power play. Practice walking away and when he sees that he doesn't have an audience he'll come around.
In public simply step away only a few feet and act like nothing is going on; once he sees your not impressed he'll come around.
Remember he needs you to be there for him.
Yes even at nine months their devious little minds are working.
The sitting up is something that you can do with a firm hand and a firm look in your eye without saying anything.

Aww.. well babies are kind a like puppies you know they cannot tell us what's wrong so if he doesn't want to sit up make sure that he is not in any pain of any kind when he sits into that position.

He isn't able to verbalize his needs or desires yet so he shows you what he wants by his actions. All kids do it at some time and at 9 months old you are not going to reason with him. Distract him.

Ignore bad behavior. As long as you worry about it you are giving him what he wants.

Sometimes when babies arch their backs it is a sign of gas or stomach distress. Next time he does this maybe try some gas drops.
