Is it best to set my router to enable DHCP or to set it maually?

It depends..
DCHP Pros
Once you set it up correctly you won't have to go to each new computer you join to your network. Easy to maintain..

Cons.
-Anyone can be associated along
-Sometimes if your DCHP server (router) gets too busy you might suffer problems of re-association and that would cause problems

Static Addressing:
Pros:
More control (some Applications will have trouble with dynamic IP)
Cons:
You should do it by manually (making sure you have the IP , gateway, network mask set as correct) for every new device you plug in.

I would recommend Static IP assignment (if you have a limited number of devices and don't change frequently), you can even add some more security with it (create an access control list of allowed IPs only within your router for example), besides browsing around the network neighborhood would be less problematic with network shares and so on.

Describe the pros and cons of static addressing?
Static addressing allows for manual configuration of IP addresses, while DHCP receives it dynamically. Having a static addressing scheme improves management of IP addressing by knowing every address on the local network, and will not dynamically change dynamically like DHCP. The administrator must keep track of any new devices that need to be assigned an IP address, and add them as necessary while giving each a unique IP address so the router will know where to send the data to which computer/device. This can create a problem if the network is poorly managed, and could end up in lost packets if not configured correctly. On the other hand, static addressing schemes allow for more direct transmissions of data to servers who do not change IP addresses dynamically like DHCP does.
•Describe the pros and cons of using DHCP for addressing?
DHCP uses dynamic addressing which changes automatically to assign new devices, and it eases administration needs by not needing someone to manually assign addresses. Any personal computing device that is constantly joining and leaving networks should be assigned addresses by DCHP, and devices that are never moved and stay on the same network should be assigned static IP addresses.

I keep DHCP enabled, but some of my computers I assign a static IP to. Why? Because I like to know the specific IP for my desktop and my wifes desktop. Sometime I need that to access it over the network and do not want it changing all the time. Other than that I do not know of any benefits of speed or anything. Just personal preference.

Run the cable at the same time as you may. My homestead is commonly instantaneous, yet i'm continually wishing I had an ethernet drop the following or there, and that's a real discomfort to position in them into complete areas. a minimum of, i ought to run some CAT5e to everywhere the position you may assume to have a television or a table. instantaneous is tremendous for various of issues, yet a stressed connection is regularly extra powerful and regularly mandatory. My the front room has an Xbox, Slingbox and Apple television on my stressed community. The Apple television will paintings wirelessly, in spite of the indisputable fact that it drops its connection each and every time someone makes use of the microwave. (you should use those CAT5e/RJ45 drops for telephone places, too. It under no circumstances hurts to have some flexibility there.) when I outfitted a house in 2002, I ran CAT5e and RG6 in all places, alongside with in-ceiling audio gadget and an alarm gadget. It ended up being a key promoting element when I positioned the position on the marketplace many years later.
