Don't listen to them. You CAN!!! I've done it a lot. Enable disk use (TURN AUTOSYNC OFF BEFORE CONNECTING THE IPOD OR YOU WILL LOSE ALL OF YOUR MUSIC FOREVER!!!) for your ipod. Then go under My Computer, open the disk, enable the View Hidden Files folder, open ipod Control and go into the Music folder. Copy everything out of there and import it into iTunes (the music files will have weird names, but they will regain their names when imported into iTunes.

I don't think you can.
Have you spotted the object lesson about making regular backup copies of your stuff here? If you can afford an iPod, I would guess you can also afford a backup disk.
Is there any chance of recovering the files from the old disk, or is it not working? There are some specialist companies who can recover data from broken disks, but it costs a lot of money.

Yes & No! yes if you also used your ipod as an external harddrive & saved them separately as backups. on the otherhand(which is more common), if you just uploaded the songs straight through itunes, chances are, once you'd lose your songs the next time you plug your ipod through the USB port.
i hope you were able to copy the songs in CDs or other media. it's just strenous starting over again provided you made backups.
