I recently moved to a small town, and my neighbors, an active elderly couple, have been extremely nice to my daughter and me. They bought us housewarming gifts (a pair of carved angels, probably worth about $20), and they also gave my daughter a present for her birthday (a drawing kit, probably worth around $10).

I want to give them something nice and thoughtful, but not so extravagant as to be awkward. I'm thinking something around $20. They are both very high energy. He dotes on his flower garden and she is into quilting. I would be hesitant to get them gifts related to these hobbies, though, because I don't want to duplicate something they already have. Their home is already impeccably decorated, so I don't want to give them any sort of a knick-knack. I don't know their taste in food (or dietary restrictions), so that's out.

I thought about getting them a nice potted amaryllis to sprout. Any other ideas?

That Idea you have of giving them a potted amaryllis (or just a selection of Spring Bulbs to plant) -- is an EXCELLENT Idea -- and also ... if you can ... maybe you and your daughter could go out on the weekend and (after your own yard is done) see if they need any help raking or picking up broken branches in their yard too!

I know they would appreciate the help -- and if you do decide to give them the Bulbs/Plants -- that they would welcome you and your daughter over in the summer to view the beautiful blossoms -- and what better way to give your child an appreciation for gardening than to have her see and work with an elder with so much gardening experience!

you're leaving out some key info. If he's retired military, i'm presuming he has a reliable pension and is not any longer hurting for money. Does he have a advantageous abode, a advantageous motor vehicle? if so, he probable does not desire something sensible for daily residing. So no blankets or slippers. Is he in reliable actual shape? if so, he probable does not desire help with chores or maintenance around the abode. If no longer, this could be a staggering present to grant him. according to threat he needs his gutters wiped sparkling, his plant beds weeded or something. additionally, if he's obese, do no longer provide him a huge field of candy or cookies as a contemporary. He could desire to be diabetic. Does he look to get a good number of commercial business enterprise? He could desire to have nieces, nephews, or little ones from a prior marriage (if he's divorced or widowed and now lives on my own) who he sees usually. If no longer, certainly invite him to a trip dinner at your place. he will probable savor the business enterprise extra desirable than the rest you'll be able to desire to grant him. in case you do no longer comprehend, you'll be able to desire to evaluate asking him what his plans are for the trip journeys, or what he did for Thanksgiving. this provides you with a concept. And if he has all of those bases lined, then the fruit basket is a advantageous theory, in the different case a contemporary certificates to a house & backyard shop, a advantageous eating place or clothing or e book shop could be large. i think of it incredibly is ultimate which you're doing this, via the way. it incredibly is what the trip spirit is all approximately!

I think the idea of having them over for din-din or just snacks is a great idea! Maybe they can help you and your daughter decorate your tree that evening and then give them a special thank you ornament from you and your daughter for their tree? I know I am a bit older (grandmother of 5 yr old) and I would love that!
