For some addicts, it's actually a symptom of another disease. Bi-polar is often a cause of such behavior. Some drugs are truly addictive. Crack and Herion for example. Most drugs are not. Most alcoholics are not genetic alcoholics, they are mentally more than physically addicted.
The majority of addicts suffer from a condition. It's called an addictive personality. Most people who are addicted to drugs, especially low addiction drugs are just people with addictive personalities who chose that drug(s) as an addiction. What they won't do is lose this addictive personality. It's genetic I suspect.
What they can do is focus that addiction into more productive endeavors and recognize they have an addictive personality. Drugs, booze, the net, porn, gambling, video games, work, sex, hobbies are all common examples of people allowing an addiction to get the best of them. Many crimes are commited by people addicted to adreniline. Most people can take part in these activities and be perfectly fine. They can use drugs or drink for years and except for drinking or drugging to excess on occasions never have a problem from the activitiy. Some people the second they try it they are hooked and fail to recognize this until they are hopelessly addicted.
The best stratigy is to treat the addictive personality. The experession of the addiction is a symptom not the actual problem. Get an addictive personality off drugs and they may easily turn into an alchoholic or an adreniline junkie. So it is necessary for those with addictive personalities to understand their personality, create outlets for that part of their personality and create stopping points for activities. Even if they have to create external monitoring to enforce these stopping points. Eventually they are likely to find there is a chemical imbalence that is a part of the condition. Finding that means that a drug can be developed to counter the imbalance. Until then it's a life long struggle for self control.

Once a person is an Alcoholic or Addict they are always, even if they never take another drink or drug. They must abstain from alcohol and drugs the rest of their life. People become addicted for many reasons. Sometimes, such as in males, it can be genetic. It can also be because that is how they saw their parents and other adults cope with emotions when they were growing up. They did not have good role models and have not learned health ways to deal with the ups and downs of life. When bad things happen they try to escape rather than face the emotions that are coming up.

First off I think we're still confused on just what an addiction is or not.... a lot of times people like to say you're 'addicted' to somebody to disprove of an action they don't like the other person doing, but really addiction has NOTHING to do with it.
I think we need to define addiction a bit better before we answer your question.

This is just my opinion.
I like to mix two tablespoon fulls of peanut butter and one tablespoon of honey.
I spread it between three slices of bread. When ever I get the craving it is for the attention of the one who taught me to do it and the resolve of sedate myself and reminds me how I rested after she gave me that which stopped my stomach from growling.
I don't want to get rid of that addiction.
There are others who find that some form of emotion or drug (even alcohol) makes them feel balanced (or together with friendly memories) for awhile, until it wears off.
If the emotional or psycholocgical reason is forgotten they try over and over until the habitual behavior requires more then most humans can tolerate.
Or until they find it to be a problem and remember why they did it the first time. Then live again.
This is just my opinion though.

Simply put, because we're not thinking about other people when we are in the active phase of our addictions. And while we might feel sad and guilty, that's not about to stop us either. Shoot, that might be a reason to go on a binge.
Can they be overcome? Certainly. Ab-so-lute-ly certainly.
But THEY have to want it. You can't make 'em. No matter what.

Addicts report being in recovery and that they never get over the addition. An individual active in the disease process is driven by the cravings and by the substance that they are addictied to. The rest of us that area not addict are diven by our realtionships and maintaining them. For addicts realtionships just get in the way of their next high.

people who are active in their addictions are not thinking about the needs of others. They are not thinking of anyone but themselves. They don't care enough about themselves to protect and treat themselves well or anyone else they "love," for that matter. I do think that people can stop acting upon their addiction(s) and stay sober when they want to. when they care about themselves and others they will. When they realize that life is better sober, they can change their behavior.
