Okay so maybe not a required college course, but I believe that Highschool youth should be required to take at least 3 years of History. No they may not care about the subject, or enter a career that directly deals with history, but nevertheless they should be required to pass it in order to graduate. I mean i was watching the history channel yesterday, and it was about the 3rd armored regiment. It was a very moving episode, The Amazing stories these world war II veterns told were so interesting. If I was in a war defending an entire countries freedom I would want to be remembered and cared about. I mean Hell if we lost WW2 and the world was ruled by a bunch of socialist dictators you can bet your *** the youth of america would care.... There is nothing more disgusting to me, than when i hear people say they could careless about history, and beign that im a highschool senior myself i hear it all too much. Who out there is with me in this, shouldnt History matter to todays youth?

I am SHOCKED!!!
History is no required class to take in US high schools?
I'm from Germany, and over here it is - well for reason, after our national history it would be awful if it wasn't. Still we discuss not only German and European history, but the whole worlds. I think it is important for young people to know about it. Most economical, ethnic, religious, and social problems we have in the world today are leading back to deep impacts made in history...
Whoever is responsible for this issue if history class should be mandatory, please make it! (No matter in which country) History should teach humankind of today to know better from horrible things that happened in the past, and therefore not to do anything like it again (e.g. WW2, colonialism, genocide, religious persecution, the crusades) For instance, consider the crusades some insane European Christs did in the Middle East during the Middle Ages trying to force Muslims become Christians. Now the situation turned around, some insane Muslim fundamentalists try to make all Christians believe in the Islam... Is that so surprising if we know history?

I was required to take 3 years of history in high school and it did no good for me, because my teacher did not care a bit about it. We had to memorize dates and events for tests, the events meant nothing to us because the stories did not touch us. History is touching, because it is the story of humanity. My children are learning history in a very meaningful way, but I am homeschooling them through a hybrid school program. They go to school 2 days per week. The really sad part is that we have a school system that is focused on the test, not for the sake of measurement and improvement, but for the bragging rights of administrators. Our youth want more of a socialist type government often because they have not studied the effects of such a system on humanity.

There is a huge movement going on under our feet called homeschooling, and it is growing incredibly fast, and those children are being educated beyond any acheivement tests measurements. They will be the future leaders of our country, and then we will see change. That is my litlle opinion, anyway.:)

History is more than mere stories. History teaches us about the law of causality. If we forget the history then we can not possibly hope to understand the reasons.

It is the apporach that goes beyond days and dates that make it appealing

History should matter to all people. The adage remains true in every age, "Those who forget the past are destined to repeat it."
