I didn't find COBOL (COmmon Business Oriented Language) to be any more difficult to learn than Basic or Pascal. It is, however, geared for one thing, and is difficult to use for anything that is not related to running a business; like making reports, doing spreadsheets, etc. It is very good at doing what it was designed for.

Hi,

About 10 years back, COBOL was often one of the first languages that were taught to prospective computer science majors. Overall, it is much simplere than C++, and many students find the procedure based style easier to pickup than java's object oriented approach.

All that being said, COBOL is not the most marketable of languages in modern days. Most schools have stopped teaching it, and I can't think of a single program that requires it to be taken as they did when I was in undergrad.

Also if you know Java, C#, C++, Perl, or VB then picking up COBOL will be a total piece of cake.

Good Luck

learning COBOL is like learning any other programming language. just learn the key consturcts and syntax and start working examples. you'll be well versed in no time.

also, if you already know C/C++, java, etc., the learning curve will be that much shorter.

Yes, specially if Ur a beginner. Try some thing like Qbasic. But if you really have the time and are smart try java or C++. And only learn one langue at the time. While you learn the logic of programming. Good place to try freeprogrammingresources.com
