I love animals and I would dedicate my life to them. But to be a veternain (sp?) you have to be strong for the owner and you have to have a strong heart especially when you have to put them down And I'd faint if I see an injured animal or a seriuosly hurt one and I don't know if i could make it. That's my only doubt about be a V. ( i cant spell right now lol) I am soooooooooo sensitive when it comes to animals. Can anyone plz give me some advice for overcoming this......er.........fear maybe? Thank you!

P.S. Animals rule! :)

Well being a Veterinarian is a difficult row to hoe so to speak. It is more difficult then becoming a doctor as there are so many who want to do it, but so few schools available. Salaries after all that work are not that great either. 90% of all new vet students are female. I can tell you from my experience in medicine that I felt the same way as a young man and thought I could never get through it. Many people in the healing professions feel that way initially. But trust me you do get over it, especially when you get personally involved. I am not sure how to say this, but it just happens. All of those fears just seem to melt away. I can not guarantee anything but I will say it is worth a try for you to get involved with an animal rescue group during a summer or even right now if you can spare the time. You will easily find if you can truly help these animals as a healer or not. some really great reading if you have not done it yet is "James Herriot's 4 Vol. Set (All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All) " It is a very none religious set of true stories about a British Vet in the 1930's. He tells it with such wit and wisdom that it just takes your breath away. Good luck to you whatever happens...

I work in wildlife, and I have the same feelings sometimes, but that is the way the world works. Sometimes we are monitoring a bird's nest and the baby birds get eaten. It is sad, but animals are born and animals die. You can only do your best, you can't control everything. If you just focus on the fact that you will be helping the animal and that it will be better off with your help, you should just be satisfied with whatever you can do.

Sounds like you are still pretty young, and some of your feelings may change. I've wanted to work with animals since I was about 4, and used to be the same way regarding injured/dead animals, but as I've gotten older (21) I've gotten better about it. I plan to be a zoologist, and am currently working my way through college at a pet store. I have to deal with sick/dead animals on occasion, and I also have to kill baby/adult mice to feed to snakes etc... I even have bulk frozen rodents in my freezer for my animals at home. If the me of 10 years ago could see it now, she'd probably be horrified... But it's all part of the circle of life and I've gotten to where I can suck it up... It still saddens me but I can deal with it.

I love animals too and have considered vet school but I am very sensitive to them also and can't stand to see them suffer. Instead I have decided to help them in other ways. I just don't know how to get past all that. I feel real pain when an animal suffers and don't want it to affect me negatively in the long run.

BUT YOU ARE NOT A NATURE LOVER LIKE ME !
Of course you can be a Veterinarian! that's a silly Question if you really love animals you should do anything to them like you said
''I love animals and I would dedicate my life to them'' Well you should do what you said because you like animals if you like them you should do whats good at them OK.I'm still 10 years old and there is a possibility that i can fail to be a Vet. But i never give up i never think that i will fail with my dreams because i believe at myself.

YOU SHOULD BELIEVE AT YOUR SELF IF YOU WANNA HELP
ANIMALS

Try shadowing a vet for a few weeks or so.
