When I was a kid you could stay out all night without an Amber alert. You could leave your doors open and unlocked without someone breaking in. And if they did, all they would want is a drink or a temporary place to lay their heads. In grade school we celebrated the country's sesquencentennial anniversary. I watched along with the rest of the world when the first female teacher to go into space blew up along with the space shuttle before it could reach outer space. Life was so much different then. There wasn't as many obese children because we always played outside and the most high tech video game was atari. I played frogger and pac man and these games were available at the corner store for a quarter. Hope this helps.

Grandma said they lived so far in the woods, they had to walk a long way just to catch the bus. Sometimes they walked and cut through cattle pastures. Once she got "ran" by a mean bull and she was just a little girl. She and her sister hauled azz. At school, they had to have their own lunch, because the school didn't make lunch for the students. She graduated Valedictorian...but there were only 12 students. She got a whipping once. That is when they didn't have to notify parents. She still hates that teacher. The teacher said she would hit her until she admitted the other little girl was telling the truth. ( But the girl was lying). I guess my point is that students have more rights and opportunities than in the 1930's and 1940's. I didn't tell you about the classes, but the teachers only had to have junior college education because teachers were hard to come by that far in the woods. She said some of them were sooooo stupid.

No one likes to be referred to as an "old person". Use the word elderly. Plus, I'm only 51, not ancient yet but we were taught how to spell and speak properly. You don't give your age but I'd say very young. I would also say, even for my age, back in the day, kids were taught to respect their elders, not like today. We had to work hard, do chores and earn anything we wanted, not like handing stuff to kids today for doing nothing. Parents were home more, we ate together and were taught morals, manners, etc. The family today is scattered all over, everyone eating at different times, broken homes, drugs, etc. We played outside all day, swam, rode bikes, had fun. Big difference today, I had a fantastic childhhod and feel so sorry for todays kids, they don't know what they are missing wanting to be grown up so fast.

Well, when I was young, we were the first family in the neighborhood to get a microwave oven, which was a BIG DEAL. We were also one of the first families to get a touch tone telephone.
When we watched TV, we had four channels to choose from, and none of them came in very well.
We walked one mile each way to school (uphill both ways, of course!), and our parents never worried about our safety. We rode our bikes in the street and played outside until after dark, and our parents never worried then either. We felt safe, we were safe, and the neighbors looked out for each other and each other's kids.
We didn't worry about AIDS or gangs either. We were afraid of getting cancer from butter, and we hoped that a nuclear bomb wouldn't turn everything to ash, but other than that, we didn't have a care in the world.
Candy cost 1 cent back then, and 5 cents for a whole chocolate bar, and no matter how much we ate we never gained weight because we were always playing outside. We didn't have video games, obviously, so when we were in the house we had to read books or play board games. We would watch TV at night, but only if it came in, and only if it was a clean program. No Starsky & Hutch in our house!
We played hide-and-seek, Red Rover and frozen tag with our friends, and we used to go to the movies all by ourselves because in our neighborhood we didn't have theaters that showed dirty or bad movies.
We had alarm clocks, and I think we had clock radios. I know for sure we had LP albums and 8-track tapes. We did not have cassette tapes because they weren't invented yet. We didn't have digital clocks, either. They were analog, and the best technology we had was clock numbers on individual tiles that flipped over. That was soooo cool!
We had color TV, but a lot of shows were still in black and white.
I remember wanting to know what the Vietnam War was and asking questions about it, but I was told I didn't need to know and not to ask anymore questions.
I remember when John Lennon died and when Elvis died. I remember being taught in school that there were three types of people: White, Black and Yellow. White people were called Caucasian, Black people were called *****, and Yellow people were called Oriental. (I'm not kidding!)
I remember being taught Darwinism too, but it was taught to us as a theory. We were taught that some people believed in Darwinism and evolution, most notably Charles Darwin, but that it wasn't really true.
We were taught that slavery was bad, the United States government was good, the Russians and Communism were bad, Democracy was good and religion was good, especially Catholicism. (This was a public school, by the way).
We were taught that reading was a very important thing for kids to do, and that we had to get a high school diploma, not a GED. We got hit with rulers if we were bad, or we had to sit in the hallway on a chair all day so all the other kids in the school would know we were bad.
Well, it's getting late so I'm going to quit now. I hope my story was interesting, if nothing else. I grew up in the 60s and 70s. I don't consider myself old, but the world I grew up in is nothing like the world today, so in that sense I grew up in prehistoric times. Good luck with your project!
(I'm not going to proofread this, so please forgive any errors I may have made.)

When we were children, we didn't have all the modern conveniences that we do now. We had old wringer washers and real refridgeraters but not as nice as now. we had a pot pelly stove to heat the whole house. and yes we had out door johns. We had plenty to eat but we raised all our own food . We had a cow to provide us with milk . which to this day I can't drink unless it is pasturized. We had to walk a mile to school one way. Then when it snowed we still had to go, but had warm clothes to wear. My mom made most of our clothes and all new quilts for the winter. For entertainment we played soft ball with the neighbors in the summer and we did a lot of sledding and iceskating in the winter. We at first would make skates out of bent cans, til we got a pair for christmas. My father was a very hard worker. He was a lumberjack most of his life then got lucky and got into construction. Then things got easier for everyone. We went to church about three times a week. My Grandmother was a sunday school teacher .i am very thankful for that. I think we were very blessed. Hope this will help. Almost like little house on the prairie. I wish i had more time to get into detail with you but this will have to do for now.God Bless.

First of all we had to learn to spell. How old is old? Older than your parents? There is a website for AARP and they have a forum of really old people that could help with your project.

It was like it is now...things haven't changed much...just our ages.
We dressed weird, we had odd haircuts, we wore funky jewelry, we used silly words, listened to loud music and our parents hated it. Nope not much of a change!
