Copyright in a work created on or after January 1, 1978, subsists from its creation and, except as provided by the following subsections, endures for a term consisting of the life of the author and 70 years after the author's death.

Copyrights secured before 1978 are good for 28 years. During the 28th year, the copyright may be renewed for an additional 47 years. Works created before 1978 that were neither published nor registered with the Copyright Office are protected until 50 years after the owner's death.

Copyrights secured after January 1, 1978, are good until 50 years after the author's death. The copyrights of anonymous works, works created with the scope of employment are good for 75 years from publication or 100 years from creation, whichever is shorter.

In come cases, copyright works may be used without permission if the user pays a set fee.
