Please refrain from buying any little knicknack with an apple, school desk, little book, blackboard, teaching poem etc. on it - I work for a school system and too many of us get these from our students (some teachers have received hundreds of these little "teacher" gifts). What about putting together a beautiful gift basket with bubble bath, lotion, bath gel, a candle, loofa and a pretty wine glass and a bottle of wine. Put a thoughtful note - something to the effect; "After a tough day teaching you deserve to relax and pamper" - "and after listening to small children whining and talking all day - have a little wine yourself". I loved a similar gift I got from coworkers - and each time I took a long bath I remembered their kindness.

Ask how it's going and listen for clues. When I was starting out, my aunt who was also a teacher, would Just talk to me about school, the kids, what's going good or bad, what I loved about my room, things I wished I had or was better at, etc. Then at Christmas time I would get all sorts of helpful things like gift certificates to stores, books on classroom management and organization, inspirational books, classroom supplies that I needed or wanted, relaxing cds, home made certificates for help with grading or housekeeping or a good back rub, etc. It always seemed to be just what I needed.
My mom would give me clothes because I couldn't afford to buy them at first.
Hope this gives you some ideas.
P.S. That gift basket Idea sounds pretty good. I might do that for some co-workers. :)

Either a really nice expandable monogramed briefcase or a gift card to a office supply store because teachers always end up spending their own money when they do projects with their students especially in the public sector.

a gift certificate to a store she can buy supplies, such as stickers (depending upon the grade), reference books, things she could use in her classroom. Even though she receives a salary, teachers need to use supplies that are not given to them in a public school, nor are they given an allowance for such items.

Just because she is a teacher doesn't mean she wants gifts that relate to teaching. That is her job, not her life. I would get her a certificate for a massage...something that is for her not her students.

It depends on how much you wish to spend! :) There is a great store called Reverse Garbage - they have stores in most of the capital cities. They sell recycled materials to anyone who wants them. I subscribed to their service for one year and received four HUGE 'surprise' bags. (These were posted to a remote area) My class and I thoroughly enjoyed going through our 'surprise' bags - useful in the classroom and you are helping the environment!

Something practical for the classroom - supply money or ask the person if they need something in particular for the classroom.
