I am wondering because I just watched Superman returns and is it supposed to follow any of the old superman movies?

This was supposed to be after the events of Superman II. If you pay attention you can see that Singer tried way too hard to make that obvious. Many references to the first 2 films. The shot of Krypton, the comments from Lex about his father explaining Land, the Brando lines, Lois misspelling, and the actor that looked and sounded as much like Christopher Reeves as possible. Hopefully the next will just be about the movie they are making without trying to convice everyone that they are continuing from the last.

It loosely follows the plot of Superman 1 and 2.
Superman 2 has been remade (Superman 2 Donner Cut) which may shed more light on how they due tie together.
Also, there is a set of 4 Prequel Comics that show some how some of the continuity of the two movies (Superman 2 and Returns) are tied together.
The main goal when creating Superman Returns was not to have to go through the whole origin again, and instead use the existing continuity from the previous films to establish this.
Returns happens 5 years after the events in part 2, and shows that Superman has gone into space looking for what might be left of Krypton.

superman returns was awsome.but from what i can tell u after seen it myself is thats its an all new story about the man of steal. the first 4 were campy silly really but i still love them too this day.but the new man of steal and the story is great .i can't wait for the next one.
