Not far, about 118 miles. Although the two metro areas have actually merged together since Orange county, which sits in between, has become a bedroom community for both. Commuter rail even links the two regions with coaster rail traveling from San Diego to Oceanside and Los Angeles Metrolink continuing on from there to Downtown LA. Amtrak also has frequent service along the corridor though is more costly. Driving can be miserable along I-5 due to the very heavy traffic so rail would likely be your best travel option. Good luck!
