My sister has three dogs, and allows the one to sleep in bed with her daughter. Today my neice was sent home from school because the teacher said she has fleas.

She was at my house all day but didn't lay on couches or anything. I'm so worried that I might get fleas! We have no pets here and I didn't really hug her or get too close to her.

How do you get rid of fleas from humans and how should I de-flea my house so no one here will catch it?

They might mean lice not fleas. If your neice was at your house than chances are you might have it as well. Make sure you have it first than just go to Wal Mart pick up a bottle of Nix, follow instructions, vacuum, wash all fabrics that she came into contact with & freeze the non washable fabrics for 72 hours (like pillows & stuffed toys). I know this sounds hard but believe me it's worth it! You don't want to let the lice spread so get rid of it now, make sure that anyone she has come into contact with knows about the lice & treats it or it could come back to you. Sorry!!!

Been there and boy it is tough. do you have wall to wall carpet? If so, it is very hard to get rid of them as long as there is an animal (your kitty) in the house. I had an indoor only cat, but the aparmtnet was infested and it took close to a year to completely rid of them. You'll need to treat your entire carpet, furniture, everything. Call a professional and aks for a whole house steam clean. You'll have to tell about the fleas so they can use the right stuff. some companies use a different cleaner and some won't do the job at all. You might want to have your cat stay w/a friend just for a day or two (if posible) so that any lingering fleas don't try and seek refuse on your cat. Even though she is being treated, they can still rest in her fur; they just won't attatch to her skin. If you don't have wall to wall, remove all rugs; clean or toss them if you can and treat your house. You might also want to hve an extermiantor come and treat your house.

Fleas are not a disease. If you are that concerned about your house go to the hardware store and buy flea bombs use 1 for each room in your house. Be sure you read the instructions carefully. Of course you and your family will have to leave the house while the flea bombs are going. Or if you would rather not do that call a local extermination contractor and find out what they would charge.

I wonder if the teacher saw the fleas on your daughter or if she saw the flea bites. Usually the flea bites the human and then goes back into the carpet or back onto the dog. However, I once knew a woman who said that she had fleas living in her hair. It was back in the days when women wore bouffant hairdos and didn't wash their hair regularly. You should bomb your house with a flea bomb, and then you should vacuum your carpet and furniture thoroughly. Wash all bedding, too. For your poor niece, if she has fleas in her hair, kerosene should take care of them.

most species of fleas are species-specific, meaning that they can not live on any other host. The dog most likely had dog fleas which can bite humans but not infest them. There is flea powder you can sprinkle around as well as give the dog a flea bath, and several to keep it from reinfesting the dog. Other than that, there is not much you can do. One of my friend's dogs had fleas and she kept getting bit for 2 weeks until all of the eggs and adults were hatched and gone.

i don't know if it's wise to put kerosene on the girls face. Try going to a grocery store and look for the same shampoos that get rid of lice. They will tell you if they can get rid of fleas.

as for de-fleaing your house, we did a kitten rescue thing once and we housed 30 feral kittens, all flea infested. Vets and pet stores sell a special spray that is safe for people and animals that you can spray on the carpet and furniture. It's a lot easier than bombing.

Don't worry though, fleas are a lot less resilient than headlice, so you shouldn't have to fight them for long, even if you do get them.

Treat your dogs(your sister's dogs) to prevent the eggs from hatching and living. You can use several commercial products, but Avon skin-so-soft is great to keep fleas off people. Also, head and shoulders can be used on dogs to help prevent the infestations
