Well, they can't force you to do it, but good luck doing anything about it. You have to look at it from several different aspects. First, can the employer easily replace you? If so, then that usually means you can easily replace your job. You can usually get fired for just about any reason, and at least where I live, the best you can get is a little unemployment if you were let go unjustly. My husband has his own business and it is hard to get good employees, so you have to ask yourself if you are really a great employee, or just another worker. If you are really good, then go to your boss and say you just have to take the day off, and that is that. If you want every Sunday off, then just explain that it is not a negotiable point for you, and if you are going to continue to have a good relationship with your boss and work there, that is the way it will have to be. You must do this with a kind and respectful, but firm attitude.
Good Luck:)

They can request that you work any day they want you to work, but, depending on the state you are in, there are some overtime laws they have to follow. (Like in California, anything over 8 hours in a day is overtime.) Also, there are federal labor laws they have to follow. If you work more than 40 hours a week, it's time and a half.
Always remember that your employment there is voluntary. If you are unhappy with the way they are treating you, not only can you find a better job, you may want to contact the labor board in your state to see what laws your state has that may be different from federal laws.

I've worked many Sundays over the years. I've been in trucking long enough that calendar days are not the issue. Its Hours Of Service in my job. We can be forced to work up to 14 hrs a day with 10 hrs off then repeat it all over again up to 60 hrs in 7 days or 70 hrs in 8 days, then... a 34 hr off duty time before starting this type of schedule all over again. This schedule includes working all the hours in a 24 hr day around the clock to make this 60 hrs in 7 days or 70 hrs in 8 days. You think you have it tough ?? LOL!!!!!!! Then when you get your mandatory 34 hr before restart, you are not necessarily at your home. It can be anywhere USA or Canada. Think about that.
So, as you can see, eventually a Sunday will fall on one of these 34 hr off duty times. Otherwise its called WORK for me.
So, if you want to keep your present job, WORK, or it will eventually be the street.

They can do what they want. You should probably talk to them about it. Make sure you are getting paid right. You work over 40 hours a week you get overtime.

Only if it is understood that you may be required to do so when you are hired. Otherwise, you have a valid reason to go to the labor board.
