There is a product called orange glow and it works really good, also next time you are in k-mart check the cleaner aisle, there are several good products there.

Are they real hardwoods or laminate? I would imagine that they are real and its an older home. You can try differnet cleaning products but they only offer temporary results. You may be able to buff the floors as well. Other wise, rather than refinish them , you can put a gloss polyurethane on them to bring backa more permanent shine. It takes some work, but will look good and not cost you the agony of sanding.

I've worked for a number of nat'l. bldrs. and the best products recommended are Bona-Chemi. They are on the web if not available locally. I tested them on mine which hadn't been cleaned properly in a long time. They looked brand new. Bona is also recommended by the hardwood companies to protect the warranty on a new floor.

You can wash them with ammonia, then get something like an oil polish (mop on and let dry) detergent. Look on the home depot website.
