my engine light came on (i just had an egr replaced because it was on) and it stayed on and then would start blinking for a while and then stay on. it was like that the whole way home (about 5 miles). what could this mean and why did it keep blinking like that- when the egr needed replaced it just stayed on.

the engine light flashes when there is a problem serious enough to damage the catalytic converter. if the problem isn't that serious it will just light up and stay on continuous. engine lights come on when your emission levels exceed 1.5 times federal standards. your catalytic converter converts you exhaust from HC and CO to CO2 and H2O. if the car is shaking it's misfiring. it's not an o2 sensor problem. get this checked out as soon as possible.

SPARTICUS is dead on.
The light indicates that the computer has identified a failure that potentially can elevate emissions to an unacceptable level above Federal standards.
When the light flashes, you are "poisoning your cat"alytic converter. Stop soon or expensive damage WILL result.
That rough engine you feel is the engine misfiring.
You should either get it to a shop, or at least retrieve the DTC's to find out which cylinder is misfiring, and find out what is causing it and repair it.
