Do you think that anybody who was great was ever once a trend-follower?

For example, and I'm just throwing this out there, do you think a person who follows trends (of any sort, Abercrombie, emo, punk..etc) have ever become something great/phenomenal?

They may have been a trendster initially, but if they became a great person they must have had to deviate somwhere down the line. For example, Morrissey adored the New York Dolls as a teen, and so on and so forth. Everone had to look up to someone or aspire to some ideal.
