The egg about 350-450 million years ago, the modern chicken around 2-3,000 years ago. Birds have existed for around 70 million years and unless the first chicken was born complete (created) then it must have come from an egg. Evolution versus religion personally I prefer evolution to fairy-tales

This is actually a syntax dilemna. If you assume the question asks "Which came first, the chicken or the chicken egg?", then the answer is actually an infinite regress of casuality. Basically, there is no answer.

But the question actually states "What came first, the chicken or the egg?" It doesn't specificy a chicken egg. In that case, the egg came first by millions of years.

if you believe in creationism, then God created the chickens. if you believe in evolution, then the egg makes more sense, as a genetically mutated ancestor of a chicken = a chicken, and the genetic mutation would occur first, followed by the growth and development inside the egg, followed by the birth and life of a chicken. if you want to be funny, its the rooster. and if you are really smart, you'll say the egg is first because chickens were not the first animals to lay eggs (as dinosaurs, even, layed eggs, and they weren't even the first!).

First i guess it would depend if you are religious or if you lean to science. religious would dictate the the chicken came first having been created by God.

Science would say that it is imposable for the chicken to be here if it did not come from an egg.

Myself i lean to the religious because how could the egg be first if there was no chicken to hatch it!

The chicken. All the animals were created full grown in the beginning and sent out to multiply.

Some form of lizard. Random variation and random mutation as well as how well it adapted to its environment led to the production of a chicken. Or at least that's all i can remember from Bio. ( EVOLUTION)
