Are you acting in a play? Singing? Playing music? In a choir? What are you doing? How old are you? How often have you been on stage? Where are you performing?

Stage fright is a misnomer. It's excitement and energy that just needs to be wrestled into helping you instead of laying you low. The other suggestions are okay, but my suggestion is that if you are prepared for whatever you are doing... well rehearsed? Then you take the energy that makes you shake and turn it into a dynamite performance!

A good thing to do as you prepare to actually step on the stage is to do some physical centering. If you know yoga, some movement will help. Shaking your hands and doing stretches will move the energy around and when it's your turn to hit the spotlight that energy will be directed to your performance and not to your feeling of anxiety.

Don't let that energy go. It's like having a supercharger on a well tuned engine. If you can turn it to your advantage, you'll fly in your performance and have a great time!

Deep breath.. go for it!

Well they always used to say just imagine everyone in the audience is naked. Why all the fat ugly old people sit down front then I don't know. Just ignore them, talk to the spotlight, pretend there is nothing beyond the foot lights if that helps. Focus on the others you perform with and the task you have to perform as though it was real life. Everyone else has gotten used to it, you can to. In time you'll see the audience is your friend, they want to be entertained and you are their darlings.

a) Breathe.
b) Speakers are trained to look about 1 foot over the heads of the people in the back row.
c) Practice 4 hand gestures - the audience will admire anyone who knows how to move. Floppy fish is to move your hand up and over and over and over. Open arms invites participation and agreement.
d) Smile and you have won 1/2 the battle.
e) Never say your sorry if you cough, miss a beat, or faint and need CPR by the coolest boy in class.
f) Remember - you get to speak and they don't so guess who is in control?

I'm sure you'll be amazing! I used to get nervous about performances, but I'm about to graduate with a degree in communication so it's no big thing for me anymore! ;)

Did you know that America's #1 fear is public speaking, followed by death at #2? This presumes that people would literally rather die than speak in public. When you're performing, think about how ridiculous that is and laugh and bring out that energy to your audience!

Best of luck!

I find that it is easiest for me to visualize that the world only exists on the stage, and that anything beyond it does not. You'll find that the audience fades from view. The "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" approach.

From the way it sounds it looks like you'll do just fine. Break a Leg tomorrow!! :)

1. Act like everybody is sitting in there underwear.
2. Practice in front of a mirror.
3. Practice in front of some of your friends.
Good Luck on your performance.

Don't be afraid. The whole audience isn't out to get you. They actually admire you for getting up there and doing it, because to tell you the truth, just about all of them would never be able to get up onstage themselves. They are admiring YOU for doing it.
