1) for the feeling they get from the music... this extends beyond just 'listening to the beat', but doesnt exclude it. Music is an emotional pastime and evokes passion not just from words, but from the inflection (tone of the words) as well. These feelings dont require meaning or explanation... they just 'feel' right.
2) to learn the language. I'm learning Chinese by listening to chinese music and comparing it to the written lyrics.

Because sometimes the flow of the music is enough to get a point across without understanding anything at all.
I listen to alot of Hindi, Icelandic, and Chinese music, yet I do not speak any of those languages. Regardless, the beat, the rythem, and getting a drift of what they are saying makes it worthwhile to listen to. (Especially bands like Sigur Ros....amazing music and i can't understand a single word)

I think music stands by itself. You don't need to understand the words to get a feel for what they are trying to say even if it is a different language if it is well written.

I think there are so many ways to enjoy music without hearing the words, say, instrument and the sounds of music itself. Lyrics is one thing, but not everything as far as enjoying music.

music doesn't have words to be understood or otherwise. If that is of any interest to you, I truly haven't any problem listening to songs of which i'll't understand the lyrics. a delightful sound is a delightful sound.

I listen to this Japanese song and I don't understand nor speak a word of Japanese. The melody is just so captivating it practically puts me in a trance whenever I listen to it.

Probably because they like the music, and the rythm of the words to the song.
Or maybe they just like the way the singer looks, or the show he/she puts on stage.
Mind you, I have to admit that, when an English friend of mine offered me to copy her Il Divo CD's for me, I thanked her but declined, simply because I won't be able to understand most of their lyrics.
But I DO like the way they look, their voices and their shows. (only seen them on TV tho)

I totally agree...why do these idiots listen to rap and crap when the people can't even pronounce simple english correctly. Rap is the music of uneducated idiots sung too fast to hear thier errors.
