what is the black smoke on the TV show lost?

it was said that it is a security system. but it also seemed to enter ecko's dream as his brother. so is this thing pure evil, or is it manmade? perhaps from the dharma experiments. it makes mechanical noises too. what are your guesses? is it the "island"? why does it kill people? why doesn't it attack the others? or even the french woman. and what is with the sickness they described in the first season but never elaborated on?

Thats one of the questions we are waiting for an answer for.
The black smoke seems to take the form of people, ie eko's brother, Boone, when Locke saw him, Jacks father in season one, and maybe it was the smoke shannon heard when she thought she was hearing walt?

we dont know that it hasnt attacked other people, it may have but we dont know it yet. And maybe it hasnt. if not you have a good point. cant wait for February.

I think the cloud is either nanobots(little robots) or a swarm of trained insects. I thik its trained to evaluate people on their danger level. Maybe the others trained it. As for the sickness maybe it was like cabin fever, where people just go nuts for no reason.
