Why do girls dress trashy, and then wonder why men don't respect them?

Wearing the big cleavage dress/top and getting huffy that men do not look at their face.... I mean surely that was the point, to attract attention to them.....Ahem

A big part of it may be our culture. Think about the movie, "Grease". There was a time when young women all tended to dress like "Sandy Before". Somewhere along the way it got so aiming to look pretty and feminine were old fashioned, and aiming to look "sexy" started to be what young women aimed for.

My theory is this caught on because - let's face it - not every young woman has an eye-catching face and hair; but everyone has cleavage and a bottom. Fashion that calls attention to body parts can make unattractive girls feel that they're on the same level with everyone else just by showing their own cleavage. Overweight girls even get to believe they have better cleavage than thin girls do. So - out with trying to show off a pretty face and hair and wearing clothes that are pretty or feminine and in with showing the body parts.

I honestly think the young women who dress "trashy" think its what young women wear. I think they believe its fashion. They've been raised in a time where being "sexy" is so valued they've almost been brainwashed into thinking that's the only thing to aim to be.

Trying to look pretty and nice went out sometime around the time the tough girls showed "Sandy" in "Grease" how to get guys to be interested in her.

I've always wished that the message young girls could get is this: Dress with good taste and attractively but a little on the conservative side because then if you turn heads it really means something. Anyone can get looks by showing off body parts, but the real test of how attractive someone is is whether they turn heads when they're not showing off "everything they own". This kind of mentality, though, would automatically leave a whole lot of unattractive or unfeminine young women out in the cold if they couldn't use their cleavage, so it isn't likely it will ever make a come-back.

In my uneducated opinion - "girls" dress trashy because they really think they look good in what they're wearing - - - "sexy."
What they don't realize is that the models wearing the clothing in the picture are about a buck o nine and dont have too many curves LOL
They figure that looking good = getting a man = getting respect from said man
HEH it doesnt work that way.
I think there are some that do it on purpose, and some that think that if they only can CATCH THE GUYS ATTENTION, then the guy will be nice to them and not treat them like the hooker they are impersonating.

Some girls dress trashy because they are. But, there are many who dress that way in the belief that men will find them attractive and beautiful. From my own experience I know that I've dressed a little trashy for attention, to feel pretty and wanted. I've learned since that I can dress sexy without dressing trashy and get attention. Unfortunately, most girls are not aware that dressing trashing makes men look at them for one thing and one thing only. You have to remember women and men view sex differently. So a woman dressing trashy for the most part isn't looking for sex, but for love, attention, etc. Also, women have to compete with other women, some feel they have to stoop to dressing trashy to compete. Hopefully, they will learn that dressing that way isn't the way to go.

Define trashy.

I mean it could be the guys' perception that the girls are dressed trashly (very revealing) and we're infused with the idea that girls that dressed skimply would mean that they are cheap or that they are not worth respecting yet again, for those who dress very conservatively males would consider them as hill-billies with no dress sense.

This makes it difficult to answer since it could be both ways (the girls really dress trashly and the guys have negative perception of these girls).

Guess we really should not judge a book by its cover, I have girl-friends who are really nice and morally right people who dress in somewhat revealing clothes, or some people would say trashly. It could be due to fashion trends, influence of their favourite stars, friends etc.

I hear this a lot. What is trashy?
I can see her upper chest, her shoulders, her arms, her back, her stomach, her legs, her feet? The last time I looked, I had the same parts, so what I see is what I already have. I see girls and women walk stupid, talk stupid, and that can make them appear trashy. But clothing? Not trashy. And many times they are not. They are either bored or acting tough so people will stop bothering them.

Girls don't know the difference between trashy and sexy. and neither do some women, in this case.

When girls do dress trashy it's usually to get attention, they think it will attract some one who will think they are hot and in return "love" them. they are confused because they think any attention is good attention, until after they have been used. Stay away from girls like this, more problems than they're worth.

I think the difference between the girls who dress trashy and the ones who dress sexy - is that the former deep in the recesses of thier hearts might believe that is all they have going for them: that men will only want them for sex.

Because you should not respect someone based soley on their clothing. I should be able to walk around naked & get the same amount of respect that I get wearng a suit.

It is your choice to look at her breasts, she is not necescariily weariing it so you do so. Maybe that girl just liked that top. Maybe she didn't see it as trashy. Maybe she thought others had enough self control to not stare at her chest.

You are severly insulting yourself if you say 'you can't help but look'. You are not a child, you have self-control.

Who are we to decide what is tarty or not. I have not been trained by the fashion police so will admit I don't know the difference. Saying that I know what I consider inappropriate but that is my opinion and I am aware that it is just that my opinion. Lets try to judge people on the actions not the length of the skirt

Most girls will admit that they prefer a jerk to a nice guy. It's in their psychological make up. Similarly to what the previous responder said, if a girl thinks she is not naturally beautiful, she will do whatever she can to improve the image that "bad boys" have for her. Girls think that bad boys want naughty girls, I think it's as simple as that
