It depends on what metal you're listening to, I prefer nu-metal over a lot of other metal but some of it isn't bad. Tell your parents to listen to Underoath they're a christian metal band and there is NO swear words in there and parts of their songs are beautiful melodies sung by their amazing drummer Aaron Gillespie. The song that would probably let your parents approve metal is reinventing your exit by underoath it's mainly singing so when your parents get used to it then bump up the metal and start listening to some other stuff. But anyways metal helps me with all my anger, and ya know what? I have a lot of it.

When it comes to music, there is no "bad" or "good". It's all personal preference. Any music you like is bound to be misunderstood by your parents... that's how it's always been, from Mozart through Andy Williams and the Beatles on through Metallica and today's groups.

If you evaluate the kind of music you like with a critical, musically trained ear and eye, you might see why you enjoy some types more than others.
Here are some parts of music to critique; melody, harmony, rhythm, lyrics. Is one part overly stressed? Are the lyrics drowned out by the rhythm? Is there little variation in the harmonic structure (in other words, is this a 3-chord --or less!--"wonder")? Are the lyrics beautiful, or crude and shocking, or non-existent?
What about the melody? Is it danceable, singable, memorable?

What makes some tunes perennial favorites and even showing up in elevator music, hummed by even your parents? and others not even making airtime on the radio?

Personally, I'm not a metal or rap fan because I see little creativity or balance in the elements of music. When music makes me depressed, angry, or gives me a headache, I find another genre. I prefer to feel uplifted and stronger when I listen or create music.

I'm 50 years young and I LOVE metal. Metallica is great, I've loved them forever! The only "bad" music is that which promotes hate and violence. I teach Jr. High and some of the so-called music I hear the kids listening to today really scares me deep down. Let your mom listen to the music you like and then let her hear some of the REALLY bad stuff. I'll bet she'll think metal isn't so bad and she will understand a little better how young people today have such difficult obstacles.

Your mom is what we call a "stiff". Stiffs can't have fun, and try to prevent others from having any.

Music, or anything for that matter, is exactly what you want it to be. If you want to listen to metal and call it evil and get some tattoos with confederate flag dragons spitting tribal flames and riding around in a Camaro made out of skulls, then yeah it's bad.

If you want to listen to it to get yourself fired up about helping your elderly neighbors clean out their gutters, then it's good.

Pop music and the ideas behind how it is produced are the real evil here. There's also a lot of good rap music out there, but it never makes it to the radio. It's not all about chains and rims like BET wants you to believe.

Look like so simple question to answer, but this question is really hard to answer indeed. And i love so much with this question. Thanks for the question. Ok here is my opinion :
The root of metal music is rock music, and then rock music develop to be hard rock then after hard rock we will find this metal music. The special things in metal music is of course their sound, we call it metal when the music is harder than hard rock. For me metal music is my life, my soul and my breath. Everyday i hear this kind of music, and after i hear with a tons of metal music everyday then i turn to be a bad man ????? NO NO NO. Maybe some people hear from the radio or see at the tv, see from the magazines that told about how is the life of metal music artist, how is the metal music concert going on, etc. So after they do all that things before then they judge the metal music is bad ??? What they judge is just through their eyes and ears, no more than that, what they should do is they have to judge it with their heart. Every music must be judged by our heart, cause music is a sound that come from the heart.
I know that many metalheads use drugs, drinking like hell or do something bad, but remember that everything are depend to ourselves, ask your self what metal music mean to you. Cause you are you, and me is me right !!!! So everything are depending to ourselves, we are all metalheads, we also can NOT to use drugs, we also can NOT to drink like hell and we also no need to do the bad things. Am i right ??
Just feel the music with your heart. Metal for me is the best music. Just feel the passion of this music. But please remember about the heart. OK.

Hail to you to love metal. Keep it alive in your heart.

If you are thinking "bad" in the sense of "morally wrong", no, metal is not inherently wrong. It is morally neutral, just like every other style of music. It can be used for good or bad purposes.

If you mean "bad" as in "poorly performed", it really depends on developing an appreciation for the inner workings of the style. In the case of metal, you're looking at how tight the band is, how catchy the hooks are, how agressive the overall sound is, etc.

i like folk and opera, but i prefer metalica over rap. I find rap is violent, but metalica just sings about pent up anger and relationships and inner dark thoughts which we all have. Metal has been givin a bad rep over the years but i don`t think they really deserve it, however as with any type of music there are the excpetional bad apples. Just that people don`t understand so they paint them all with the same brush.
Get your mom to listen to Momma said by metalica.
she might change her mind

Metal and classic rock are the only genres of music I enjoy. The only rap I can tolerate are The Beastie Boys and I'm The Man by Anthrax.

I like Metal and many other types, almost every type. I think people should listen to what they want. Also depending on their mood. If your mad and feel like going to Chucky Cheese with an A.K 47 and shooting everyone metal might not be good, could get you more angry, but maybe not. Other then mood issue i think metal is great
