It's not shiny now (like a bit rusty)

spit and shine; jk, but if it just needs a polish, try just washing the zipper part. or if it's a fake one and wasn't that expensice, try a nail polish top coat... but then again if it's getting rusty, i don't think there's much you can do about that...

You could try cleaning it with WD-40. But they sell gold leaf in liquid form. You could take a soft cloth and dip it in the liquid and rub it on. That way it would just hit the metal of the zipper.

try some lemon juice or baking soda..

they use lemon juice to clean pennies, after all =]
