Well, if it slips a tooth, you'll know because it will run like doo doo. If any at all. Depends on the motor. If you are doing 60 when it slips, you may encounter a problem with interference. Mitsubishi engines are interfering engines and when they go out of time, then the pistons come up and hit the valves....bending the valves. Now, this is not very typical. Most engines these days are non-interfering. Just make sure you can turn over the cam before you go buying a new belt. If you can roll the cam over..you will have a little difficulty.. then you should be fine. Good luck.

If it slipped and it still runs, I wouldn't run the motor, because if it is out of timing a valve could be open while the piston is at top dead center, and you can destroy your whole valvetrain. If you know you way around the motor you can probably do it, I would get another timing belt and replace it, and make sure your motor is timed correctly. If you take it to a shop it can cost you $800+ depending on what type of car you have.
good luck.

Your mpg will go way down. Your lucky that you are still driving. Replace the timing belt ($200?) before it breaks. That way there won't be additional, very expensive repairs.

your car will run like crap if it slipped bad enough. and since the moving parts need to timed so as not to interfere with each others operation, it is a crutial part of the engine workings
